Commissioners Court.
Monday.—Samuel R. Nichols presented his credentials and was declared a legally constituted member of the Board, to represent the second district, and to serve for the period of three years from the third of December 1883. Some forty-odd claims were disposed of. "11 of them being slowed in full, or nearly so, except the claim of White county of $187,25 for caring for Jasper county prisoners, which was disallowed. Tuesday.—Thirty claims were considered. The claim-of Lewis S. Alter as ditch commissioner, of $741, ditch assessments against Jasper county was disallowed:as were also three claims, sell, M. D., for medical aid to.lunatics and prisoners. The claim of Burger & Parker of $89.91 for material for Jordan bridge was allowed at $55. That of Ezra C. Nowels, $548, for making plat and transfer was continued. All the others were allowed in full or approximately so. The suit of Wm. B. Burford against z the county for a difference of $125, on bills for stationery was compromised by the hoard payingTii m SSO, and he agreeing to pay all costs already secured in the suit, except witness fees taxed in favor of Geo. W. Burk, Asa C- Prevo and John Waymiro. Wednesday.—The day was devoted mainly to road and bridge business of a routine character. Tin ksday. -Roads and bridges again occupied the attention of the Board, for most of the day. Five or six claims were passed upon and allowed in full. Friday.—Five b.lls were disposed of. Those of Vashti Wilson, $3 for washing for poor of Barkley township; and John Jordan, $65.70 fgr work on Jordan Bridge were disallowed. * The trfhers were allowed, in full. The case of Aaron E. Pierson and others, petition for allowing hogs to run at large in U nion township, opposed by Theodore Warne and others, remonstrants, occupied a large portion of the day. James W- Douthit was attorney for the petitioners and Thompson & Bro. for the remonstrants. The Board heard the evidence and Arguments in the case and decided to compromise the matter by allowing hogs to run at large in that portiop of the township north and east of the Iroquois river, and restraining them in the rest of the township.
Saturday,—The Bridge.—A num 1 erattsly signed-; petition was presented asking the Board to modify their action at their last special session, in regard to an iron bridge over the Iroquois river in Rensselaer, to the extent of providing for a single driveway instead of a double. A remonstrance against the prayer of the petition, also numerously signed by solid citizens, was presented. A, The Board decided that the interests of the county would be best served by granting the prayer of the petition, and accordingly decided to rescind all their former orders in regard to the bridge, and to build one of iron with a single driveway. A special session of the board will be held on Dec. 27 to take farther action in this matter.
The suit of John W. Powell against she Board fur the amount. oTdisallow-ed claims for keeping and boarding insane persons, and other matters, was compromised by the Board paying to Mr. Powell $59.10. The Auditor was directed to notify blank book and stationeiy dealers, in Various places, that the' Board will receive sealed bids until March, 7th, 18S4. for furnishing Stationery 8:5 to be used in the county offices. _ S. R. Nichols was appointed agent of the Board to look after the general ■ interests of the poorfarm. To buy ard hire laborers &c. Forty claims were allowed, two or three of them ,at somewhat reduced amounts. B. P. Thompson's bill oi 875. for lumber, and J. W. PoWfell’s of ' iaHalhrriwwere '•ontinoed.

Methodist Matters.
The Rev. T- C. Webster was at Monticello all of List week contacting a series of revival meetings. He preached every evening during the' week, and took the lead in a social meeting every afternoon. He returned to Rensselaer Saturday evening but' again went to Monticello Monday morning. He reports that the iueetings are proving verygsuccessful. The Rev. Webster preached last Sunday evening to the largest congregation we ever saw in Rensselaer that wasnot drawn together by some special attraction; a good evidence that his remarkable abilities as a preacher are finding a deserved' appreciation among our people. The Pastor announces that he will begin a series of revival meetings, in this place, upon tjie first of January. It is not to be supposed that the good brethren of tee church “choose darkness rather than light”, in the hall of the church, “because their deeds are evil’ ’ but rather because they dis 7 likp [o go to the expense of buying a 1 imp and maintaining a light therein. There ought to be a good reflecting lamp kept burning there every evening when services are held, the sam* as in the Presbyterian church. A special collection some day, when- the congregation is not expecting It, wilF settle the lamp question without doubt. The Sunday school is preparing to out-do fll their former efforts in the way of a Christmas celebration, this year. Attractions exceeding in interest even the involuntary roasting of Santa Claus, two years ago, are piomisjd.

They handle a greater variety of tools and implements than almost any otiiet class of men. They mount bidders, clamber about stacks, loads of Hay, onto the soof, and even climb trees. They are among the hooff and horns and teeth of their live-stock. They drive in a protnicuous way, in—nil sorts of conveyances, and at all times of the day, and in the darkest shades of night. They are, therefore, nt all times, liable to cuts, bruises, kicks, gores, bites, falls fractures and other injuries, yl/Z Injinituyii. This being true, every farmer should deem an accident policy itidispensible.
