Soot as a Fertiliser.
Soot is one of the best manures for house-plants, and if it can be had in quantities large enough it is excellent for out-of-door use. ’ For the latter it is best mixed with one-tenth its bulk of salt. . - : | It is said that the largest grapevir e in the United States grows on the premises of Mr. Madden,, in Pike county, Ga. It is 18 years old, is thirty-fottr inches in circumference at its base, is a quarter of a mile long and yields five wagon loads of grapes. One cypress tree in the Ogeeche swamp, near Egypt, Ga., measures thirty-one feet in circumference seven feet from the ground. At the. ground it measures thirty-nine feet in circumference. . ,
