McCoy & Sob, the celebrated cattle men of Rensselaer, have sold 3000 head of cattle since Jan., Ist, 1883. 1400 of these were glazed on their own pastures. Mrs. Charlotte Irwin died at her residence in this last Tuesday at 5 o’clock, p. m. The funeral took plade yesterday from the Church of God, the Rev, T. C. Webster preaching ihe sermon. Mrs. Irwin had reached the advanced age or 84 years.
E. T. Harding, now of Magnolia, Pike county, Mississippi, was elected a justice of the Peace, at the last election, on the republican ticket, by 72 majority. The Squire administered justice in this county for- a period of 12 yea fg. F. J. Sears went to Chicago, Tuesday, and will be absent several days. He is selecting a large stock of fine Holiday goods, and expects to have in stock by the first of December, the finest display of Holiday goods ever brought to the citv, be sure to look in at Sears &■ Son’s when you are getting your Christmas goods. Messrs. Alfred McCoy, and son, T. J., visited the Fat Stock Show, in Chicago, Sat urday. They report a-splendid show of stock, but as Saturday had been made a “free ■day* for the public .schools of tha city, there was . present such an lmmeasureable mob of school boys as made life a Burden inside the building, and any ‘ protracted stay there impossible. • Mr. W. G. Smoot, commonly known as Pap. Smoot, of Julian, had the serious misfortune to lose his dwelling and nearly all its contents by fire last Saturday. It caught from a. defective flue, in the absence of Mr. Smoot and his son Ben, and having burned until the roof fell in, before it was discovered, but little opportunity was left for saving the contents df the house. Mr. J. A. Pierce, now of Kearney, Neb., but a former resident sos Rensselaer, is making a busirness visit of a, few days in this I vicinity, He will return to Keafj ney within a slioirt time, and thinks •of driving through with a number ■'of horses, ‘ and says if any young i fellow wishes t , Chance for a free j ride, he should be glad to accommodate him.
The work of! putting a new floor in the Opera House is now in prb<- ' gress. It is to be of hard maple lumber, and will Be excellently adapted for nnk and dancing purposes. It is to be a “dead floor”, or in other Words to be laid with a substance beneath it .which will prevent sounds made upon it from being heard in the store beneath. Skating will of course be suspended until the floor is Completed, which . will not be Before Monday or Tuesday next, at the soonest.
Miss Hattie Gibson is again the guest of her sisters, Miss Ida and Mrs. W. Cole; The Roller-skate Masquerade will take place at the Opera House, on Thanksgiving night, as previously announced. He is occupying Isaac Kepner’S house in Thompson’s addition. Mr. Miner will hold his first regular services next Sunday, at 10:30 a. m.
