His First Joke.
“My first joke,” said that hardened offender. ,J. Henry Rice, Auditor of State, “was when I was a very small boy. A well-meaning lady in our neighborhood, Mrs. Toomey, had surprised her friends and confounded her husband by giving birth to triplets. Shortly after the remarkable event, conducted by a brother of the trio, I went in to see the babies, to greet the proud mother with, Good morning, Mrs. Three-my,’ whereupon I was energetically shown the outside of the house. It was a long time before the good women forgave me. My first practical joke was some time after. It was April Fool's day. Going to school early in the morning I tacked a nice little card on the door hearing the words, “No school to-day.” Scholar after scholar read it and went away. When the teacher cajne I was the only one in school. Comiitg to the desk and laying his hand upon my head, and looking into my innocent eyes, he said: ‘The notice didn’t, fnnl yon, yon knew there would be school t<?day, did’nt you, Jimmy?’ And after he drew me up and dusted my trousers, I went oat and kicked myself.—(lndianapolis Journal. ... _ m 9 m - ■**'*•" We take pleasure in recommending Hall’s'Uair Renewer to our readers.
