The Reduced Postage Rate.
Our Uncle Samuel, as represented by the post-office department, played a rather scurvy trick upon Postmaster James lately. Mr. James thought he would be a little previous in getting in his order for u suppl.y of the new and aesthetic two-ceut postage stamps preparatory to the reduction in postage, which begins next Monday. He accordingly sent in a requisition for a large supply, and, instead of sending him stamps of the new design, the department shoved off upon him a couple hundred dollars worth of the old and ornery style. They will pay postage just as well as any, however, and it wjll hot take very long to use them up. This week he received S3OO of the new two centers and also a supply of the new four cent stamps. To people sending over-weight letters it may be of interest to state that Congress, through some oversight, neglected to provide for a two cent postage-dtie stamp, and accordingly, if a letter is over-weight, and only partly prepaid, the recipient will be obliged to pay three cents for each half ounce of over-weight upon which the postage waS not paid by the sender, instead of „two cents as should be the case. Congress will probably correct tins matter at their next session. In the . mean-time, the post-office~nfficials have no choice but to use the three cent postage-due stamp.
