Statement Showing the Nnmber Taken Since 1862. • Kansas Heads the List, with Dakota Second and Minnesota Third. (Washington Telegram. 1 The Commissions of the General Land Office has prepared a very interesting statement Showing the number of original homesteads entered in the several land States and Territories, by fiscal years, from the passage of the Homestead act. May 20,1862, to June 90, 1883. It will be seen that the greatest number of homesteads were entered in Kansas, while the next largest number was entered in Dakota the next in Minnesota, and so on in tbe other States and Territories in the following order: Nebraska, Arkansas,'Alabama, Missouri, Michigan, California, Wisconsin, Florida, Washington, Mississippi and Oregon, the smallest number being entered in Indiana. The first tbi ee homesteads entered in Illinois were in 1863. In 1878 fortysix homesteads were entered in the same State.
