Rensselaer Republican, Volume 15, Number 47, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 2 August 1883 — Circus Day. [ARTICLE]

Circus Day.

Sells Brothers’ circus bus come and gone. The day was fine and the crowd enormous. The people came in from all directions, on foot, in wagons, ahd on horse-back. Remington, Goodland, Morocco, Francisville, and all the intervening country sent in vast numbers of people to swell the crowd. n The circus performance, though presenting one or two new features, was much the same routine that is gone through with by all circuses. Old, indeed, but ever new. The menagerie is an excellent one, and nearly fills the bill. They make a very creditable street parade. Of course people had their expectations pitched on too high a key and were necessarily disappointed, but somebody is bound to be disappointed at every circus. A good many gaming and other “skin games” were in vogue all day, but so far as we have heard, none of our citizens were taken in to any very serious extent Notes. They showed at Delphi Tuesday, and are at Frankfort to-day. The street “fakirs opened out in business the evening before and caught a large amount of patronage. The hippopotami have big mouths, but not so large as the footers for the side show snide.

The showmen are a very quiet and orderly set. The afternoon performance was somewhat better than in the evening. They of course took in a great deal of money, but they spent a good many dollars in Rensselaer. The fact that the town saloons were closed all day, on account of the railroad election, prevented drunkenness and disorder almost entirely. About half a dozen boot-blacks debouched upon the streets in the morning, but word having come to Sheriff Powell, from Delphi, that they were all pick-pockets and sneak-thieves, himself and his deputies made a raid upon them and locked‘them all up in jail until this morning. W. H. Coover of this paper started East on Tuesday for the transaction of business connected with the settlement of his father’s estate. He expects also to spend sometime in visiting friends and old time neighbors in Harrisburg, Carlisle, Chambersburg, and other places in Cumberland county, Pa., y and will probably not return until “the middle of. August or latter. — “Remington News.”
