Independence Day Reverberations
Rensselaer was magnanimous this year and allowed her more humble neighbors to take the fourth of July and do what they pleased with it Some of our people went to Rose Lawn, some to Cedar Lake and some to Chicago. Others took in Lafayette, mid still others did time at Goodland, and some tried hard to “get there” and couldn't Those who etaid at home found it so awfully dull in Rensselaer, that they; confidently expect Providence Io allow them another day for it, The People of De Motts in Northern Jasper were disappointed in not having Colonel De Motte with them, on the Fourth, for reasons explained elsewhere, but they had an excellent celebration notwithstanding. The Sunday school* picnic at Saylor*! School house was pronounced, by those who were present, to have been one of the neatest little affairs of the kind on record. The address of the Rev. James T. Abbett, in the forenoon, fairly charmed his entire audience, and called from those present a unanimous vote of thanks for the pleasure and the profit they had derived from Mr. Abbett’s efforts. In the afternoon short remarks were made by several parties, and a general good timo indulged in. Many Rensselaer people were present at the picnic.
Coming at Last.—Of course we, individually, never go to a circus for any purpose except, just to “see the annimals,” but nevertheless we announce, with a good deal of satisfaction, that a really first class show, and one with an established National reputation is coming to Rensselaer in a few weeks. The show is Sell’s Bros., and will exhibit here on Wednesday, August, First, —the very day of the rail-road election, by the way, a fact which will not be to the disadvantage of either circus or election. The “City of Tents” will occupy the base ball grounds.
The base ball boys propose giving an Ice-cream Festival and a dance, Saturday evening, in Makeever’s new building, for the purpose of raising money to defray the expenses of their proposed trip to Michigan City. They don’t wish to go there at the expense ot the county—the usual way, but still not popular.
