The First Elephant in America.
A correspondent of the Boston Journal writes: βThe first elephant en exhibition in New England, and said to have been the first in the United States, was killed at Alfred, Maine, in the year 1817, about one mile west from the village, in a piece of woods near the Round pond, so called, on the old post road leading to Dover, IX. H. A man by the name of Davis had an altercation with the manager, the day previous, while on exhibition at Alfred, and sought revenge by shooting the elephant. The affair caused a great sensationat the time throughout New England. The looality is known and pointed out to this day as the spot * where the elephant was killed.β β Bbitish peerages to the number of thirty-seven, one-tenth of the whole number, became extinct in the last fifteen years; 809 peers and 234 peeresses died at ages from two to three times greater than the average of the community. , β Paris surgeons now make dimples at 1 napoleon eaoh.
