The National debt statement for' 1 'March, shows a reduction during the month of $9,344,826, Good work that ought to be persisted in. * The lowa prohibition amendment decision is now up for a rehearing before the state supreme court at Davenport, and is being argued today. As to the legality of Sheriff Powell’s claim against the county for money expended in recapturing Roberts and Ins companion, we are not lawyer enough to risk an opinion; but as to the justice of the claim there is no question whatever, and we earnestly hope that some means will be found for its adjustment. - ■ - JLi—Jii" Chicago is to be cursed by the government of the Godless for yet another two years. At the city election Tuesday Carter Harrison, the greatest demagogue in America, the friend of the thieves, thugs, gamblers, prostitutes and saloon keepers, was re-elected mayor, and till of his crowd goes into office with him. The Republican Editoiial Association of Indiana, held a special meeting at Indianapolis last Thursday evening, which was well attended by members of the fraternity from all parts of the state. Several matters of imporrance were disposed of, and the occasion was made interesting by speeches from Senator Harrison, Gov. Porter, Lieut. Gov. Hanna, Major W. H. Calkins, a number of state senators and others.

The Oar Shops. — Last week it was proclaimed all over the state that'the L., N-A. & 0. car shops had been positively located at Moil on, and even the Lafayette papers “threw np the sponge” in that matter, but if an item which quote from the “Indianapolis Journal’’, of Monday, be correct, the "matter will not bh decided until the meeting of the board of directors on the 9th of this month, at iS ew York. The arguments in the GougarMandler trial began Monday afternoon, and the end cannot be very far off. A long and bitterly contested case that has provoked the fiercest personal animosities, and called up on overwhelming mass of contradictory evidence, it strikes up liko a case foreordained to end in a disagreement of the jury, and wo venture the prediction that such will be the result of the trial. “Be at tii is ip you can. —Our old friend and Postmaster, G. B. Clark, is sending 11 sacks of potatoes to Dakota, and each sack is of a different variety.’’-“Remington News.” Beat That! —Great Heavens Brother! You didn’t expect to take the Munchausen belt by any •such mild fabrication as the above did you ? We can find a dozen men in Rensselaer who- could talk in their sleep and tell bigger lies than that, and down in Lafayette if a witness in a law suit didn’t testify to a larger falsehood he would bo fined for contempt of court. And see how the “Newton < ountv News ’ sends you to grass the first round, We quote: “A giantess, Marion Wedde by name, is being exhibited in Manchester, t England, bhe fs 18 feet, 2 inches in bight, ;iud as she is only 17 years of age, •>he may attain still greater proportions.” ,

Two of our young men have just returned from the same school, after a long winter in hard study, besides their money and time. What thanks do they get from our present Supfc., who fdoubfcs whether ;he cau give the young man a lici ence on account of not being able ;to control a school. If he cannot : control a school, why would the people want him to teach their school two terms, in succession in a neighborhood where he has lived from child-hood? Poor encouragement to teachers to spend their time and money for improvement. m -.... ........... .. A Great Improvement.

The Janper Counts Draining Association. r The dwellers amid bull-snakes, musk-rats and miasma, should come to their own rescue, and by a voluntary offering help the good work to an early accomplishment., There have been taken 255 shares of stock, and 45 more must be taken. Most of the owners of swamp land in the valleys of the upper Iroquois, the Pinkamink, Coppess Creek and Stump Slough, have shown a spirit of generous aid If the other proprietors will be halfway just, and lend pecuniary aid, the mill-dam will be removed before May Ist, 1883. The work can be done quickly, cheaply, and id a friendly spirit by voluntary aid. Each one who would reap an advantage ]oy removing the obstructions to the flow of water in the river, ought to measure that benefit, and chip in with aSV,X, or more. The project ought not to fail, and we believe it will not. It is the people’s own work, and the plan proposed is one that commends its self to all good and well disposed persons. The stubborn churl, whose avaricious and stinted soul makes him utterly parsimonious, ought not to own swamp lands. The neighbors of such a man need meek and gentle spirits, not to rebel against doing good and paying for benefits to such a thankless niggard. We hope that -ere the ides of April each swamp-land holder and speculator, tributary to the millpond, will see himself as an equity Judge would find from the evidence, and pay what he owes toward the accomplishment of the purposes of the J. C. D. A. Its Objects-Are: Ist. —To remove the mill-dam and all artificial obstructions in the Iroquois river, in Sec. 30, Town 29, north, Range 6 west. 2nd. —To procure a steam flouring mill to be erected instead thereof. 3d.—To own and lower the rappids of the Iroquois river. The stock of the association is $6,000. An organization can be had with $3,000 or more of paid up stock. The shares are $; 0 each.! Take one or mftre shares.
