Too Much Oppossum.

When Lafayette paid a visit to theUnited States, he intimated his desire to beoome master of an oppoasum, and a Baltimore editor gladly undertook te see that the General had one to take home with him. Anxious to make the most of the oooasioa, he proclaimed his want in*a highly apioed appeal to his countrymen, urging them to prove that Republios were not always ungrateful They responded cheerfully—too cheerfully to the appeal Oppossnms came in from North ' and South, East and West, until the overwhelmed journalist found himself poseoesoosod of 2,190 too many. He oould not afford them separate aooommodstion; he dared not lodge them together; so at night he turned them all loose in Monument Square to quarter themselves as they listed. Next day oppoesums were here, there and everywhere in Baltimore, to the delight of the blade and the disgust of the white citizens, who fervently wished that Lafayette had never heard of ■gpppossum, or that the editor had executed his commission with more discretion.
