Not much worse than Porter County.
Copt. Babcock went over to Kentland the first of toe week end heard the conclusion of a robbery case, and then surrendered the honors and emoluments of the .judgeship to 'Od. Hammond, who will complete the term.
A popular Rensselaer minister Recently ga re it as his opinion that 'religious interests of all kinds were at about as low an ebb in Jasper county as in any other in the state; and*that in the number of church edifices, especially, this county bad the smallest number of any in the state. The last report of the Indiana Bureau of Statistics gives the number of church buildings in Jasper county at 10, in Porter county 10, and in Miami county 8. This last being the smallest for any county, and Jasper and Porter being next. In the value of church property Porter exceeds Jasper two to one, while Miami is more than six times better off than this county. In the total number of church membership Jasper is, next to Starke county, the lowest in the state, and in proportion to its population it is the very lowest, with Porter a good second. Even the much maligned Posey county has nearly twice as much religion to the square foot of its population as has Jasper county, while our neighboring county of Newton, which has not, to our knowledge, ever been accused of being righteous over much, has a church membership more than three times S eater, in proportion to its popudon, than this county has. In the amount of money paid ministers during the year Jasper still shows up badly, but not quite so bad as some oilier counties, and, in proportion to their total population, there are quite a number that have really come nearer towards solving the problem of a gospel literally ‘-'without money and without price” than has Jasper county.
