PERSONAL AND OTHER MENTION.
The Ladies Literary Society will meet at Mrs. Alfred Thompson’s Satuvaday afternoon Feb. 24. Miss Katie Wenrick, has gone to visit friends in St. Joseph Co., Michigan, and. will not return to Jasper Co., for some months. Married. —At the residence of the bride’s mother Feb. 14th 1883, by Bev. Peter Hinds, Benjamin F. Fisher to Merry O. Nichols all of Jasper Co. Ind. Mrs. Malinda Spitler is improving slowly from her late severe illness and her friends are greatly encouraged with her prospects of recovery. • Mr James I* Mather has sold his farm near Salem, and is talking of moving to Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Mather are now visitimg friends in Joliet, 111. The Barkley bastardy case of Eva M. Galbraith vs, John Ferguson Payne, the trial of which was to have taken place on the 13 inst, before squire Marion, was settled by the parties and dismissed. The circuit court has been in session the last two weeks, D. E. Straight of Fowler presiding by appointment of Judge Hammond. The judge has gone to Fowler himself this week to complete the term. Mr. W. W. Beeve has been appointed to the position of Deputy Town Marshal during the sickness of Mr. Dickey. Mr. Beeve has cleared off the street crossings in good shape and the surprise of the inhabitants, thereat, borders close upon consternation. Col. A. N. Field;* of Chicago, has contracted with Mr. Vurpiilat to paint the scenery of the Vurpiilat Hall stage. He will arrange *the stage after the most modern style, and we believe he will do Mr. V. a and substantial piece of work. The work will be pushed to completion at once.—“Winamac Republican.' ’ Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Peacock returned home Friday evening [after a visit, of some fourteen months duration, among friends and relatives in New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Illinois. Mr. Peacock reports a very pleasant visit for himself and lady, and notices considerable improvement in Bensselaer since his departure. An unmarried woman living in the west part of town, and to v/liom years have failed to bring discretion, gave birth to a son last Saturday. Oja Tuesday it v/as currently reported that a young business man of the town had gone west for the “good of his health,” or to “grow up with the country” or something of the kind. The reports turned out to be incorrect, however, and latter in the day it was announced that an arrangmeht had been effected whereby the case will be kept out of the courts. That intirely estimable young man, good harness maker andright good fellow generally, Mr. George Grauel went to Kewanna last week on an important aud interesting errand, as will be seen from a notice of marriage which appears in another place. He became a little nervous towards the latter part of last week in regard to the interruption to travel occasr ioued by the Hoods, and in order not to run the risk of being absent at his own wedding he started Friday, going by the way of Remington. Camp Fire Postponed;— 'There being so much sickness, and the danger of spreading contagious diseases has made it necessary to postpone the Camp Fire that the [G. A. 8., had proposed to have upon the 22d. if the sickness abates, and the weather be so it will do, they will have it the last of nest week, or so soon thereafter as surrouncling circumstances will permit. Sills will be circulated in plenty of time. The “Boj s” and girls, wilkkeep right on practicing, and the postponment will only give you a better entertainment. By Order of Committee.
