THE REPUBLICAN
Bombazine, j. V. W. Kirk. Brarritz doth. J. V. W. Kirk. In using Vitalized Air in the extraction of teeth Df. Kelley takes great Paine, but gives none. There is the finest line of boot and shoe oil, at Haley’s shoe shop, it beats the world. Haley says* and all the people of Jasper county know that to be gospel, that if a map will put that oil upon his boots, he may stand in water up to his neck and not get half as wet as two drinks of saloon whiskey would make him. 15 cents a box, at Haley’s. Sign of the Gold Boot. Save your Sole.*— Why should not a rubber boot have a new sole? Judge Haley (the Boot Doctor) has a newmethod whereby a rubber boot may be mended, half-soled, and made to do good service for a long time. The Judge holds open court every day, Sundays excepted, and will be glad to make you a new BOLE for your rubber boots, or a pair of A-l leather ones. Remember the place, next door east from Dr. Loughtidge’s office, sign of the Gold Boot. Lafayetie Courier. The selection of Horace Heffren to the temporary speakership of the House yesterday was a gratuitous insult to the loyal people of Indiana. He is no statesman. Hasn’t a symptom. With more bowels than brains, he might run a side show for a circus, if lie could find a fat woman sufficiently reckless of her associations. We are asked to forget the bitter memories of the war, and let the dead past bury all its dead, and yet the Democracy never miss an opportunity to dig up some fastering corpse like Hefiren, and poison the air with an enormous stink.
Argument is needed no longer to demonstrate the correctness of Fire Insurance. The man who does not proteot himself, his family and his creditors against casualty by fire, is now regarded as not quite a sound business man. We say the correctness of insuring against casualty by fire is now universally conceded by the best business men. Yet fires are occurring every day, all around us, and many of our neighbors negligently fail to insui e their dwellings and contents. This too in many cases where the loss of the property would seriously embarass, if not almost impoverish, the owner. Farm dwellings, and other detached property, can now be insured in the best companies in the country at fates that would take 300 years to absor the value of the property in insurance. While we unhesitatingly commend insuring, we also caution all persons against placing risks only w companies of established, sound reputation* Avoid itinerant agents and do business with reliable men at home, who have a double incentive to make you secure. In this connection, we are pleased to note, that there are a number of sound companies represented at Rensselaer. Among these are six of the best companies in. the United States represented by Frank \V . Babcock, ■who will be pleased to write on all desirable risks at the low r est prao table rates* An Instantaneous Light. Such in a wofd is the unique apparatus on exhibition at the rooms of the Portable Electric Light Company, 22 Water Street. It Occupies the space of only five square inches and weighs but five pounds, and can be carried with ease. The light, or more properly lighter, requires no extra power, wires cr connections, and is so constructed that any part can be replaced at small cost. The chamieials are placled in a glass retort; a carbon and zinc apparatus* with a spiral platinum attachment, is then adjusted so as to form a battery, and the light is ready. The pressure on the little knob produces an electric current by which the spiral of platinum is heated to incandescence. The Portable Electric Light Company was recently iueorpor, Vied v/ir-i a, capital of §IOO,OOO, under the laws of ‘ JllfasiMieiin setts.
