THE REPUBLICAN
The Justice’s Court.
A (Three coshered rumpus between Peter Minectts and his son-in-law, John Holliday, upon one side and Oarl Hengesbach upon the other, resulted in Peter pleading guilty, Friday, to assault and battery, on Hengesbach, and his being lined one dollar and costs. Holliday, it seems, had bought a carpet of Hengesbach, agreeing to pay for the same upon a certain day. Before the day for payment arrived, Hengesbach, according to the story, went to Holliday’s house, in the latter’s abscence, and tore the carpet from the floor, and raised cane generally. Considerable . ill feeling already existed between Hengesbach and Minicus, and this last act served to precipitate matters, and hence the assault and snbseqeent fine. An affidavit for “malicious trespass” was filed against Hengesbach. The case being set for a hearing next Mondas. John Davis, who claimed to be employed in helping to fill Singleton big ice house, up at the Kankakee, was lodged in jail, Monday night, and the next day plead guilty to being drunk' and was fined one cent and costs. A very dirty case was on trial before Justice W ood, in the Court room, Monday evening, and, of course, attracted a large audience: and amoug whom, as we are informed, were a large number of boys. We take their occasion most earnestly to suggest that boys ought, by no means, to be permitted to be present during the trial of cases of an obscene character. John Ferguson Payne *vas, yesterday, on the relation of Eva M. Galbraith, taken before Squire McCleary, in Barkley tp., to answer to the charge of bastardy. Jas. W. Douthifc for the State, and F. W. Babcock for Payne, being the attorneys. A change of venue was taken to Squire Marion, the trial being set for Feb. 13th.

“All Nubbin Ridge”
On .the evening of Friday Jan., 19 a/ literary entertainment at Burn’s school house, In Barkley tp. wa9 turned into a regular Pandemonium by the lawless deviltry of a lot of hard citizens from Nubbin Ridge, or thereabouts. The result was that on Monday lait John Barkley, Fish Gilmore, and David E. Isreal were tried before Squire Wood on the charge of disturbing a public meeting. W. W. Watsonprosecuted the case and James W. Douthit defended. The case was well contested on both sides. Barkley and Gilmore were found guilty and fined five dollars each and costs, the whole sum amounting to abont $22.00 for each man. Isreal wes acquitted. Frank Goff, also of Barkley, transgressed the law at the same time and place, as the parties above mentioned, and, on Monday evening was tried on the charge of public indecency. Court aud attorneys, same as above. Goff’s offense was too filthy to particularize about, and it is but charitable to suppose that whiskey was in, and sense and self-respect out, before he committed it. Fined ten dollars and costs.
