The Remigton Fire.
Cain “raised cane.’— Win Cain and Frank Eck are two neighbors < f Carpenter tp , who dwell not together in peace and amity. Mr. Eck was recently crossing the land of Mr. Cain when the latter ordered him to betake himself from the premises.. The order not’ being complied with as promptly as expected, a fight of considerable magnitude took place, the ultimate result of Ulrich was, that Mr. aforesaid, was on Saturday last brought before His Honor, Sq. Wood, and having plead guilty tn the charge of assault and battery was fined one dollar and costs. Bad Accident.—The icy weath er of last Saturday resulted in a very severe accident to one of the most estimable ladies of Rensselaer. In the forenoon of that day Mrs. Alfred McCoy slipped and fell upon an ice-covered walk and broke the femur, or thigh bone, of her right leg at the neck, or just at the point where it enters the socket of the hip joint. Injuries of this ch'aracter are very painful and difficult to heal. Dr. Loughridge, who is attending the injured lady, reports that she is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances.
The “Remington News” gives the particulars of the burning of the old Hathaway building, at Remington, on Saturday Jan., 6th. The fire took place at an early hour in the morning, and its origin is not known, but the News inclines to the opinion that it resulted from the accidental ignition of a match. The lower part of the building was occupied, as business rooms, by F. D. Carson, and Jean Cadier, merchants. The upper rooms were used as offices by H. W. Snyder, att’y, and Dr. Patton. .all these parties lost heavily, but the uninsured loss of H. W.Snycbrwrs the greatest of any; his loss being estimated at $2,000, with an insuiance of only S3OO. Nearly S3OOO, worth of F. D. Carson’s stock was destroyed, on while there was an insurance of $20.00 Jean Cadier’s stock was valued at SSOO, of which nearly three fourths were saved, but in a damage condition. Insured heavily. L>r. Patton lost his office turniture, library, &c., worth SSOO. No insurance. The building was worth al out $2200. Insured for SIBOO.
