The Circuit Court.
First week.— Last week Was devoted mainly to probate matters, and others of no special interest to the public. No. jury cases were tried. Second week, Monday.—Edward O’Connor was tried on the charge of illegal selling of liquor, M. H. Walker for the prosecution; F. W. Babcock defending. This was an old offence having been committed in 1880 in the building once known as the “red hell.” The case was tried by a jury, the whole afternoon be devoted to it. The verdict found by the jury was “guilty” with a penalty of a fine of 820.00 and costs of trial. Tuesday. —S. H. Duvall was tried before a jury on the charge of allowing minors to pi ay billiards in his billiard room, Walker prosecuting) and M. F. Chilcotb for the defense. The trial occupied the entire day until four o’clock, when it was given to the jury. Wednesday:— ln the case against S. H. Duvall, tried the day before, the jury brought in a verdict of not guilty. Timothy Howard, (colored) plead guilty, to the charge of assault upon Richard M. Johnson, (also colored)' and was fined $1 and costs by the court, and sent to jail in default. The second indictment against S. H. Dnvall for allowing minors to play billiards in a public place, was then taken up and occupied the remainder of the day. Thursday: —The jury brought in their verdict in the case of S H Duvall, tried the day before; The defendant was found guilty and fined five dollars and costs; The remaining indictment for allowing minors to congregate in His billiard room, was continued until the next term of court, defendant giving bail to the amount of SIOO, for his appearance.
