PERSONAL AND OTHER MENTION.
Mrs. Malinda Spitler has been lying sick at the house of Judge Hammond for some time. At the North end, Mrs. M. L. Spitler and Miss Julia Smith are recovering from severe attacks of sickness. Elder R. S. Dwiggins will deliver a discourse next Sunday morning, at the Christian church, on the subject of ’‘Christmas No. .2 Mr. J. W. Caldwell, of Sheldon, 111., agent for the Eclectic series of charts, maps, &c., visited his relatives, the Monnetts, over Sunday. The new post-office in Walker tp. bearing the pleasant sounding name of Opal, is now in running order and doing, literally, “a postoffice business.” Messrs Wm. Holle and Wm. Walker are the first to order The Republican sent to that office.
Mr. Joseph Williams, incorrectly reported de&d last week, is still living, and, according to his physician, may continue to live for many years, though he is still very sick. 1* The L. N-A. & C. railway company has finally definitly abandoned the express carrying business. After Sunday Dec., 17th all their express business was turned over to the American company. Lafayette is at last sur£ of the New Albany car shops, accordingto the Indianapolis Journal, as the plans and specifications for the buildings are in process of preparation. The Hon. Godlove S. Orth, member of congress from tLe 9th district, died at his home in Lafayette last Saturday flight, after a six week’s illness, 'His system was broken down by malaria, but the immediate cause of his death was blood poisoning from a small glandular tumor upon his neck. His funeral, which takes place to-day, will be attended by Gov. Porter, and many others of the leading men of the state, and by delegations from both houses of congress. Gov. Porter will order a special election to fill the vacancy in cangress caused by Mr. Orth’s death.
