Rensselaer Republican, Volume 15, Number 15, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 21 December 1882 — King Cotton a Curse. [ARTICLE]
King Cotton a Curse.
It is estimated l>y a Southern newspaper that the people of the South lost in the war only about one-fourth as much as they have lost since the war by speculation in cotton. The same paper declares that cotton is a curse to the South. This sounds strangely in a land wl>ere it was proclaimed twenty years ago that cotton was king on this continent. Father —“ Fritz, yon out to lie ashamed to whip such a small boy.” Fritz—- “ Why so?” Are you ashamed to whip me?”
