GILLAM ITEMS

Gillam is still blessed with dry weather and plenty of dust. Threshing is in the order of the day. Mr. and Mrs John Robinson, Mrs. Lydia Bishire and uncle Johnnie Lewis are numbered on the sick list. Prof. W. E. Netherton, 6upt. of Pulaski county was married at Francisville Sunday, two weeks ago to Miss Caddie Ross, Daughter of J as. H. Ross Esq. of Francisville. May peace and happiness ever attend them. 1 Miss Laura Rathton is visiting friends at Ft. Wayne. Mr. Coppess, wife and daughter from Ohio paid his brother Adam Coppess and friends a short visit lately. I Miss Ella Long and Miss Ida Stevens expect to vidit friends in Ohio soon. We are all glad to see H. R. return alive. Boys take warning from the lesson of the “flat car’’ The social at Andy Faris, Monday evening of last week, was well attended. The paaty was entertained by both vocal and instrumental music, which consisted of several comic songs given- by of the young ladies, all seemed to enjoy themselves splendidly.

UNION ITEMS

Corn is doing well. The River is almost dry. Sowing wheat aqd needing rain There are several we 11 loaded peach orchards in the township. Several non-residents have been here looking up their work on the Shields’ ditch. There seems to bequiie a demand for stock hogs. O Zeb Swain and Amos Alter have purchased top buggies. Most of our people spent a day or two at the fair, and w ill do the same at the reunion. Another hog petition is being circulated tor signatures. This perhaps will be the last attempt. We heard some complaints made with referrence to the limited display of agricultuaal products and the improper distribution of the premiums at the county fair* We, too, after looking'over the long list of large premiums on fast horses, and considering that the corn in Jasper county is worth more than the horses of the county, think, that the premium on corn might be placed higher than, one dollar with a good result We are inclined to doubt the propriety of a speed ring, at all in an agricultural fair. Itisj said to be necessary to draw a j crowd. Let the premiums be ; increased on other things, and the fruits of the fielvl will come flocking in, in such vast * quantities that the hall will have to be enlarged, and all will wonder at the amount one county can furnish; several agricultural societies have adopted this plan with good results.

REUNION ECHOES

Gen. Sheridan and staff will come and will remain until to-morrow evening. Judge Gresham; of the United States superior court, is taking in the reunion. To-day and tomorrow will be bigger days than any iu previous history of Rensselaer. All Newton county is in town to-day, ' t Some galoot with a gambling game sneaked into Camp Milroy hat night; but the boys dreamed he was sutler of old days and carried his ranch off on the point of the bayonet. ANNIVERSARY

The children, grand chil. dten and great grand children of Mr. Daniel and Mj-s. Rebecca Grant, on last Sunday, Sept. 24tb, loaded their baskets with the good things of earth, and called upon the two worthy old people to celebrate, with them their fi2d Anniversary. It was a perfect surprise to the old folks. There were of relative gathered there that beautiful September day, ranging from tlie two sexegenarians to those who were in the first year of life, s<>. They spent an enjoyable day, and wished the old couple might live another decade, and that they might all gather together upon each succeeding anniversary and exchange kindly greetings with Grandpa and Grandma.

AN AGREEABLE ANNIVESARY

►Some fifty of the friends of Mr. and Mrs.. Emmet Kannal met, by invitation, at their residence, last Saturday evening, to help them celebrate the tenth happy anniversary of their married life. It was a* very enjoyable affair, throughout, and a large number of beautiful and valuable presents remain as lasting testimonials of their friends’ esteem, Our Friends should not fail to be at La Fayette on Wednesday, October 4th.
