Riding on a Cloud-Bust.

A. 8. Holley, while hunting on Squsw Creek btttife, Indian Territory, encountered a cloud-burst torrent He was in a gulch, heard the warning, saw a mighty ware of water rolling down fire feet in depth, and attempted to escape; but before he oould get out of the gulch the wall of water struck him and took about a mile, and Anally threw him on some brush in an unoonsoiouS condition. When he came to it was dark, and he was compelled to remain out all night He got home next day in a very demoralized condition. A heavily-charged cloud had come in contact with the butte, and, bursting, pohred its accumulated waters out Mr. Holley is the only man who ever had such an adventure and lived to tell it That he escaped as he did is —Boise Democrat. In the Times , of Pliiladelphia, we observe : Mr. John McGrath, 1236 Christian street, was cured by St. Jacobs Oil of severe rheumatism.

Home-Like.

A forlorn widow, the third night after her husband’s death, sat at the window watching the stars with sleepless eyes. “This trying to go to sleep,” she soliloquized, “without a quarrel of some kind is bo new that I can’t stand it.” Jnst then two men under her window fell to fighting. She watched the conflict to the end/then quietly undressed, saying. “ That’s kind of home-like,” and in a few minutes was in bed and fast asleep.

Gave instantaneous relief. St. Jacobs Oil. Neuralgia. Prof. Tice.— St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Got the Worst of it.

> ' [Texas Siftings.! Said an Austin judge to a seedy looking man who was np for vagrancy: “I’ll let yon off this time, but hereafter you had better be more careful what kind of company yon keep.” “Yon bet Pll be careful what kind of company I’ll keep hereafter. Jnst let me off this time, and we will never set eyes on* each other again.” The judge squirmed a little. The lawers giggled, so to cover up his defeat the judge said: “You should cultivate diligent habits. Don’t you know that industry sweetens the bread of life?" “I don’t care a cuss for sweet-bread. Com bread and coffee is plenty good for me, if I don’t have to work for it,’’ “You can go. Gall the next cask"

Injuriout Habits.

Avoid all habits that are injurious to your health. The practice of going about the house winter mornings with naked feet often causes a bad cold that may end in consumption. Rapid eating causes qerangement of the digestive organs. A quarrelsome habit may end in murder. The habit of taking severe cathartic medicines is very unwise. When suffering from indigestion etc., it is best to strengthen those organs by using Dr. Guysott’s Yellow Dock and Sarsaparilla. It assists nature in restoring health and strength to every part of the body.

The Work of an Editor.

The duties of the genuine dyed-in-the-wool, simon-pure editor are multifarious and multitudinous. His work is not only to “do a little writing.'' as is sometimes supposed, but to cull, to glean, to select, to discriminate, to decide, to forsee, to observe, to grasp, to explain, to elucidate, to inflate, to boil down, “to be, to do and to suffer,” and several hundred other verbs, with a large number of districts yet to hear from. A PHysiciAN writes: “I have found Dr. Guysott’s Yellow Dock and Sarsaparilla is a perfect and complete cure for sexual weaknesses the most stubborn of all debilitating diseases. The fact should be generally known. It will save many from the clutches of that vile class of medical pretenders who call themselves specialists, but whose specialty consists mostly of prolonging the suffering of their victim and emptying his purse.

Faro Flayers’ Notions.

An experienced faro player will in nine cases ont of ten put a whole stack of chips on a deuce spot should two colored men enter a room abreast; but should a dog by any means gain entrance he will immediately cease playing and wait for another deal. A cat—especially a black . one—making its appearance during a deal is a signal for heavy betting, while a cross-eyed man would cause consternation and much profanity.

Useless Fright.

To worry about any Liver, Kidney or Urinary Trouble, especially Bright’s Disease or Diabetes, as Hop Bitters never fails of a cure where a cure is possible. We know this. Under the new law Chinese going home to make a visit with the intention of returning to this country will require a passport, but the identification of a Chinese is a difficult matter, he differs so slightly in appearance from thousands of his race. To prevent the possibility of fraud it has been suggested that the authorities should take advantage of the fact that no two human heads are shaped exactly alike. It is proposed by means of such a machine as hatters use for measurement to represent upon >every passport by small holes punched through it the outline of a horizontal section of the owner’s head. Alt, along the Frazer river the edge is black with salmon, while the creeks for a Jong distance are jammed with them. Millions are to he seen, and, as the water goes down in the creeks, thousands are left to die.

How to Secure Health.

It seems strange ’that anyone will suffer bom the many derangements brought on by kn impure condition of the blood, when Scorin'* Sarsaparilla and Stillingia, or Blood tnd Liver Syrup, will restore perfect health to the physical organisation- It is indeed u rtrengthening syrup, pleasant to take, and has proven itself to be the best blood purifier ever discovered, effectually curing Scrofula, Syphilitic disorders. A great number of the diseases to which mankind ore liable arise from a disordered condition of this organ. Keep it in a sound and healthy condition and you can defy disease. Pbickly Ash Bitters are especially adapted tor thiß purpose, being composed of drugs which act on the Liver, giving it tone and strength to withstand malaria. Why December 25 Is Christmas.

Before Pope Julian’* time. Christman, which seems to have been first officially instituted a church feast day by a decree of Pope Teleephorns, between 142 A. D. and 164 A. D. f was a movable feast Indeed, it was the most movable of all the Christian festivals. It was usually oelebrated by the Eastern branches of the Christian church in April or May, while in the western part of Europe days in January or other months were observed as Christmas. St Cvril, Bishop of Jerusalem, obtained from t*ope Julius L authority to appoint a commission to determine, if possible, the precise day of Christ’s nativity. From the chronological archives of the Reman censors, establishing the times of occurrence of oertain events of the same period of the Roman Government of Palestine, the theologians of the eastera and western divisions of the Christian church agreed upon Deo. 25 as the date of the birth of Jesos, and thereupon tbia became the officially decreed and generally aooepted Christmas Day.
