Miss. Lizzie Purcupite has been very sick intermittent feyer. The county Institute closes with a Special Examination on Saturday Sept. uth. Mrs. Phebe Thompson, of Marcounty is the guest of Miss. Lydia Parris. Wm. E. Sears has removed from Animas City, Uoi., to Rockwood in the same state. Mr. F. L. Cotton has been quite sick with intermittent fever, but is again able to be about. ♦ Mr. and Mrs. John Starbuck of Union City, Ind., are visiting their relations, the Dwiggins. : Rumor hath it that. a prominent young grocer will leave the state of celibacy, in the near future. »• E. H. Tharp has rented W. T. Perkins store room in Rose Lawn and will start ajgrocery there spon. C. H. Price and Dr. Loughridge represented Rensselaer at the democratic contention at Winamac. Joseph Williams has sold his farm to John Kessler. Mr. Williams will remove to Kansas next month. Mr. H. R. W. Smith returned to Cincinnati last Friday. Mrs. Smith still remains in Newton township. Mr. and Mrs. K. S. Dwiggins, with their friends, the Starbjicfcsrf from Union City, spent Sunday in Chicago. Mr. Willis McColly, now of Muncie, Delaware county, is visiting, his father, the old squire, in Union Tp. Thos. H. Davisson of union Tp. is building a store room at Pleasant Ridge into which he will move his stock of goods. Major Burke, of the Makeever House, started for Fargo, Dakota, last Monday Morning for a stay of several weeks. A very pleasant gathering of young folks was held at the residence as Hon. R. S. Dwiggins last Friday evening. Mrs. Alfred Thompson and the young people in her company returned home from Chautauqua Lake Tuesday evening. Miss Mamie Osborne of Whitehall Mich., and Mrs, A. Cole are visiting their sister, Miss Amanda and other friends. Mr. A Leopold is « building a side-walk in front of his - newly acquired property on Van Rensselaer st. A good move. E. 8. Morris of Jordan Tp. is going to Kansas as soon as he can dispose of his crop and make the necessary preparation. We hear that F. M. Spitler and Mr. J. A Burnham started for Boston Monday morning being called thither by the severe illness of a sister. * th I Dr. 8. L. Ensminger, of Crawfordsville, whose wife was Tudie Austin of old, is visiting with his family his relations in Rensselaer. We aro requested to gently rewind the town marshal that a considerable crop of weeds still obstructs many side- walks in town. The Jasper County Teachers’ Institute will meet in the Court House Monday Aug. 28th 1882 and will continue in session two weeks. ■ The state Suoertendent will lecture in the Court House Tuesday evening Aug 29th. Lecture will begin at 7:30. Let all come out and hear him.
Mr. Geo. Sebring, marshal of Remington called on us the other day, .He did not come with a warrant or anything, and we are glad to see him. Messrs. Hale Warner, M. Tuter, W. H. Legg and E. D. Rhoades are attending the Supreme Lodge of the World, Knights of Pythias, at Detroit this week. ■' ■— *♦- Stahls, recently of Logansport is building a house north of the depot, and will engage in coopering Rensselaer need a mechanic of that kind and he will fill a want. The County Board of Education will meet with the state Superintendent in called session Aug 29|h 1882. Meeting will be held in county Supt’s office at 1 P. M. Prof. Geo. F. Bass of Indianapolis is -announced for a lecture evening Aug. 31st. The public will show its interest in educational topics by its attendance. * -r- - e- - Messrs M. F. Chilcote and C. H. Price attended the ceremoifies of conferring the order of the Red Cross by Valparaiso Commandry, Knights Templar, last Fiiday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. W. DeM. Hooper will remove to Indianapolis this week to make that uheir future home. Mr. Hooper has accepted the position of special agent of the Aetna Life Insurance Company. The ladies know a good paper when they see it. May E. Monette of Marengo. lowa, Tina Bullock of Wessington, Dakota, and Anna Webb, of Monon Ind., are new subscribers for The Republican. Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Mitchell have returned from the home of the latter, in Vermilion county 111. Like most everybody who goes away from this pleasant town, they are glad to be in Rensselaer again. Mr. Joseph Williams a notice of sale appears in this issue, is about to remove to the vicinity of Fredonia Kansas. On last Saturday evening August 19th a surprise party and Supper was given by the “Merry Maidens” at the residence of A. Leopold,. in honor oft Miss Rachel Leopold’s' 15th birthday, a pleasant evening: was passed by all present. John M. Bloss State Supt. of Public Instructibn, Prof. Bass of Indiahapdis, Prof. Thomas of Wabash and Prof. Hunter of Bloomington will be present. This promises to be the ’ best Institute ever held m the county. r The lawless gamins of the town have racked and tetered- the footbridge over the race-way to the Artesian well to such an extent that it is no longer safe for passage. Measures should be taken at once fpr rebuilding the -bridge, and also’ if possible, for keeping the boys l from destroying it when built. Later .-Behold, my son, the power • of printer’s ink.
