Mr. C. W. Clifton made a flying trip to Hartford, Conn., last week, returning to Rensselaer on Monday morning last. Charley combined- a certain amount of pleasure with his business while away. Took in Niagara Falls, for instance, and spent some little time in viewing the sights of Gotham. At Hartford he called upon some of the qhief notabilities of the town. Mark Twain, (S. L. Clemens), appeared to strike Charley as rather an ordinary sort of man, somewhat addicted to the use of slang, and who giveslittie outward evidence of the matchless waggery of his character. Charles Dudley Warner, joint author with Twain of the “Gilded Age,” and som# other works, and a distinguished author on. his own hook, impressed him very favorably. A man of fine culture apparently, and pleasing manners. Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stpwe, the immortal author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” seemed a fine motheily old lady, who looks to be, as she is, seventy years of age. He saw also and was pleased with ex-Governor, and.ex-Postmas ter-General Marshall Jewell, and inspected the princely residence and grounds of the late Horsepistol Colt, the great fire-arms man, Miss Carrie Winters of Logansport is making a visit to Mjss May Washburn.
Judge Hammond heard and decided an important case in LaFayette last week. The Tippecanoe county commissioners last year contracted with Farman & Pearce qf Indianapolis, for the erection of a court house. Considerable work was done last fall and a large amount of material gotten on the ground, During the winter Farruan died, and Pearce, seeing that he could not complete the building without loss to himself, surrendered the contract and compiomjsed with the commissioners by forfeiting all the work already done, the material on the ground, and a large sum of money. The commissioners then decided to employ mechanics and laborers and to go on and complete the basement story tinder their own supervision without stopping to advertise for sealed bids. This method was objected to by some of the citizens of that county, and John Opp brought suit for a temporary injunction to restrain the Board of Commissioners from proceeding with the work in that manner. Judge Hammond was called upon to hear the application, and decided that the law required that the commissioners must advertise for sealed proposals and let the work to the lowest responsible bidder.
