"ABOUT THE SENATOBSHIF.”
. The Kentland Gazette gives much space ' to correspondence on the above subject. L In the past the Republicans held a pti- | nary election in the precincts of Jasper ' county, to-wit: on June Ist, 1882. At this h election 928 of the Republican voters of the L county expressed their <«pini*ns about the ‘‘Senatorship” upon tickets arranged with r'inst ructions thus. Isstkuctions —ist-Any legal voter who 1 will pledge hitnself to support the State and I County Republican Tickets at the November, I 1882, election shall be entitled to vote. I 2nd—Bor convenience in counting, use this I form ol ticket. B 3d—The Committee recommend that each voI ter choose a candidate or delegate for each place I and a full blank space is left in which to write I such choice. 4th—Each voter can, by erasing or leaving |‘ printed names or writing in other names, make I his own ticket, and the committee express no | preference. I Sth—Make a careful selection of a delegate [ who will gp to each district convention. f- Sth—Voters a*e cautioned to leave but one | name on the ticket for each place. For State Senator. SAMUEL C. MAXWELL. I v I For Delegate to Senatorial Convention. I On 850 of the 928 ballots cast the name ■ts Samuel C, Maxwell was nut erased. What I affect the result of our election may have ns I evidence in determining the choice of the I Delegate Convention is to be determined I from all the surrounding circumstances. I Our Central Committee placed ouly the I aames cf those on the ticket who assisted to ■ pay the expenses of the primary election, I and made the request. The Committee was ■ not informed by any announcement in the ■ newspapers, nor by any communication that ■Henry S Travis wanted his name to appear Binder the tules as a candidate for Senator. ■He has no more right to complain than has ■mb one of tbur thousand other Republican ■ voters in the district whose name did not ■ appear printed <>n our tickets. | The real purpose of our primary eb ction ■ vas to select by ballot precinct delegates to ■JI the District Conventions. The expression as to candidates ought to be considered ■»8 a fact showing the peoples’ will by the ■ lelegates selected but not to bind their con- ■ cienue. I The delegates in the entire district have ■>een selected nnd we think those from the ■irecincts of this county are as intelligent ■ .nd conscientious Republicans as the voters ■ould find The Central Committee had B.othing whatever to do with the selection of Jlelegates. Each precinct acted independently and to the true manhood of each deleJftte comes the appeal to do the best he can ■u convention. Each precinct having a ■eparate delegate the county cannot vote J>n a call as a county. The true candidate Bor Senator will be announced as the result Jf deliberation. Here is the roster of the ■onvention, and good men they are. We ■bide by their decision. The vexed Buestion of “county rights'’ and a cuunty’s Boting as an unit in a district convention Bught to be fairly discussed. We regard the ■hole business of arraying one part of a Bistrict against another part by appeals to Bical pride and jealousy as pernicious. The ■Basoningof “Citizen’’ was fallacious. The ißillowing principles receive our approval: ■.l The convention is for the entire disand is composed of delegates, notcoun■es. 82. The roll of delegates ahould be called not counties. HI 3. Each delegate should attend in perBn. 4. All votes should be by ballot and com - Bleted before the count begins. |BVe want a candidate who will respond to his Ball by bearing our colors to victory and elected serve the State with honor and The district for eight years has had M Democratic Senator. Such results are |Jot creditable to our recognized majority. The campaign will not be an easy one and |Bir candidate should be a ready debater so !■» to bear the burden of discreetly discuse|B>g the varied iaeuee. ■ Our “primary’’ wae not affected by any IBradM nor arrangements. Il was tovel in |Bome respects and may be ill understood by |Bu> friende who managed in a different way select their representatives in V s conLook the aatnee all over and you Brill find good men from onr precinct*.
