-A. TBIEVTE —TO THE NATION’S DEAD. Delivered at the Cemetery at Rensselaer, or Decoration Day, 1882. BY FRANK W. BAD.OCR. —i Tread softly here! and let your sweetest strains <K song and music lill this air! Here lie The noble dead—the brave patriotic Sons and sires who, for the lovie«of country. Threw themselves into the breach, suifered the Deprivation* of army life and died, - That we might enjoy and perpetuate Have to r.s and our posterity A government the best that ever bath Been vouchsafed unto motal man’; Well may We scatter rich and fragrant flowers here, And strew their graves with Flora’s rarest gifts. Until their fragrance mingled tills the uir With richest perfumes and oitors sweet shall Rise like incense from this oliering. Befitting, too,it is that we should sing Our choicest songs and hereseud forth forthem The finest notes of harp and pipe and horn There ashes, well we know, are insensible Quite to all we do; but memory lives With us if not with them, nor till all thought Shnll bc forgotten with them in the grave. Van we forget their great and val’rous deeds— Their sacrificing love that .romptel them T'o act the part and brave the death they'died Have ye seen the frowning storm-c.ouds rise like 'Towering mountains high on the horizon. Till their angry blackness.threatened to fill All space and overwhelm the earth with sure destruction? So rose the darksome war clouds On Columbia’s borders when, surcharged With treason and rebellion, in discord bore, and angry three ten ings, her elements, With wild commotion depicted only Irismembennent, anarchy aud ruin. Then, answering to the country’s call, went these And for their country’s life pledged theirs. Have ve Se£n, upon the front of that black angry 'timid, the fierce and forked lightnings, thicker And faster, paint its fiery course athwart The liea-tens, flash wildly chasing flush hi Such rapidity that all the upper World seemed ablaze with tiie pent up wrath ol Elements gone ma|l? So blazed the battle Lines where in dense darkness ol the midnight Onslaught, elbow to elbow aud knee to knee, stood these among the loyal hosts and true. Have ye heard the bursting thunders rending Heavens with peals territic, causing earth To quake and tremble-as when volcanic Ruptures shake her, sharp claps and heavy bolts With aggravated fury vying which Shall most conduce to panic? Thus the air Was rent In fury in the awful din Of buttle, where musketry und cannon Foe on foe in conflict tlinudered, volley Each for volley sending, while screaming shell And hissing bullets, round shot, cannister Grape aud chain shot thickly as the hail of Winter tilled the air with deadly missels. Many fell there, but the gaps were closed and Quickly, now hard pressed, but soou they rally Foes to route and triumphant h<*ld the Held. Not all in combat fell our brave ones, Many had it so been better? for to die 11) battle like a hero for holy I’rinciples contending, shouts of triumph Era-while with strains of martial music and The din of conflict mingliug, gl ry there Is much to abate the drend of oeatii Fain would each patriot thus his lifegive un Wbeu he must die; but glory such is not For all. Some with angry wounds long-lingered Languished sonic with fell diseases, racked in puin Or scorching fever; others still wore captive Taken and starved or rotted of neglect tn prison pens more worthy the savage Than pretended christain people. 1 heir Agonies, credeatli relieved their pangs, no Mortal knows. No sister kindly moist the Parched lips or cooled the feveiediWound. No Mother there her darling boy to nurse, each Wantanticipate,to soothe, to cheer, us Sone nut mothers cun and lastly to wipe The cold sweat from his brow aud close his eyes In death. Nor wife whose love in ev’ry touch Is felt, whose words in ev’ry doubtful hour Give cheer,—no wife was there the husband’s call To hear, in sympathy to know eash want - To minister in love to »ach. to buoy Up with words of hope, and with unfailing Thoughtful care to till a place uone other Could. So many died, in hospital or 1 ield, or in the loathsome pens where death t< Life was preferable. „ Not all like thes. Have mounds to mark the place or sculpterei stone To tell the curious passer by who bleeps below; but many more in unmarked Trenches lie, and some— their bones are bleach ing Where they fell. To them our tributes are u. Less than these. And whether by a foreign Foe they fell, or by their erring countrymen Were slain, we honor all. So let it be tit, T nneshall end, that they who for their tountr> Stand against their country’s foes, or foreigu Ur rebellious matters not, such tribute smuti Shall have aud more their rightful due. No. their Graves alone keep green—their tombs snnoin. with Incense sweet —in mt mory their virtues Treasure up aud sing, that generations let to follow, so long as time shall last, Shall emulate them in all their steadfast; Devotion to their country in peace and war. , , , , O God, we pray that calamity such As late befell our Jaud—and though many A household sent those pangs so deeply lelt Of heroes, loved ones failed—again shall Ne’er her glory blight- ..hat we, as thou has t More enlightened made us than barbarians Of ages past, ways better many flud than The bloody carnage ol mortal combat To adjust what e’er of wrong there be to Kight. Remington Items,
Dear Republican:—The week opened more favorably for business men, milliners and tradesman generally, than it did for the farmers. However it has cleared off and, although planting is late, corn may yet make an abundant crop. The much talked of flax mill is going to be an established fact. Some gentleman jiame forgotten) a capitalist of Marion, Ind., is going to begin preparations for breaking flax and' manufacturing tow at once, giving employment to ten or fifteen men. Corn will no longer be absolute kins but have a mighty rival in the flax trade of our county. The Chicago Barb Wire Fence Co. cars have been taken westward. We presume the butchers and grocers regiet their departure. Some theif, or theives, broke into the postoffice on Monday night and secured a small amount of money. After ransacking the letter boxes they took their departure presumably for the residence of J. E. Hollett, as that gentleman’s cellar was entered and a quantity of milk, cakes, pies and other provisions were confiscated. The M. E. church will soon be improved by they application of a coat of paint. The contract was avpu’ded to a gentleman from Power, who will soon begin the work of renovation. The Republican primary election passed off quietly and harmoniusly is all Republican elections do. As he names of the candidates are juite likey to be printed in aiiothci ;olumn it is not necessary to give them here. Being republicans, it is safe) to assume that they are good men.- ithat they will be elected and that they will makegood officers. Miss Gilman, of Illinois, who has been spending the last few weeks »Vith Mr. and Mrs. Wm, Shaw, goes to Cleveland, 0., this week. Health generally good over this way. Mrs. Wells, who has been Jh the sick list for a week or two, is recovering. Mr. 0. Landon is about to buy the Mrs. Rawles property, now occupied by J. H. Tribby. M- E. bocial at the residence of M.
