A Jew Fish.
A fish-stand on Main street yesterday had a Jew fish on exhibition which attracted a great deal of attention. It was six feet long, about five around its body, and weighed 255 pounds. It was orovided with eight separate jaws, all set with rather soft teeth. Under its gjlMßups were four gills each. Its eye-balls were about two and a half inches in diameter. The mouth measured about a foot. It was caught Monday evening at Santa Monica, by T. W. Sampson, a onearmed negro. He says it was clylsod in near shore bv some seals atm was carried up on tne beach by the breakers, where he first noticed it floundering. He ran and grabbed hold of it with hiß single arm, and commenced hallooing for help. The fish pulled and Sampson pul ed. Someiimes Sampson had the fish ashore, and Mr. fish would give a flop take Sampson with him out in the water, only to be again stranded by a receeding wave. About the time Sampson’s strength b gan to give out, some friends came to his assistance and oaptured the fish. The flesh of he Jew fish is white and res mbles cod, only it is superior, They cau be caught in large numbers off the coats of Lower California, A and are destined to become quite an article of com-merce.*-Los Angelos (Cal.) Times. The fire at the Olivet (Mich.) college is not so Berious a loss as was at first reported. Total loss, 25.000; insured for SIO,OOO.
