New Tp. Officers.
Sheriff Hay, of Monticello, was in town last week. Charley Warner came home from G reen castle last week. M. I*. Chilcote has lately received a pet, in a felon on his thumb. —M*. Chas. P. Mayhew has handed in his resignation as member of the town council. Judge Hammond is holding court for J udge Chase, at Logansport, tliis week. Mr. Heath, of Warren county, who is considerable of a stock man, is in town. Last Saturday we received pleasant visits from our patrons in all parts of the county. Call again, gentlemen. Monday night came a frost, and the peach crop will be scarce this season as the trees were all in bloom. Ice an inch and a half thick formed on water out of doors. Upon order of the circuit court a cable hitching rack has been extended along the court yard, on Cullen street, and the bull-pen on Washington street has been removed. The Dakota party left Monday night and went from Chicago Tuesday morning via. the Chicago and Northwestern ' railway, the best route to reach the great center of emigration into the territory. The Hon. W. W. Gilman, of Goodlnnd, present Representative in the Legislature from the District of Jasper and Newton counties, was in town Monday night. Mr. Gilman will prob ably be a candidate for re-election.
Geo. H. Stewart, Esq., of Fowler, was in town Tuesday. Mr. Stewart is a candidate for the Republican nomination of Prosecuting Attorney 6f the thirtieth judicial circuit, and he will be a formidable candidate. See his announcement elsewhere. • \ ■««» Charley Wundt, representative of the firm of P. J. Pauley & Bro., of St. Louis, who have the contract for building the jail, has been in town for a week past. Work wjll be commenced on the building as’ soon as the commissioners locate the place for it Mrs. Briggs and daughter, of Logansport, arrived in town last Friday, the guests of Mr. c,nd Mrs. Ralph. Mrs. Biiggs returned to her home Monday, leaving her daughter Miss Jennie, here for instructions in music tinder Mrs. Hamar, of this place. * r -> - Thomas Roach, 6? Monticello, has been in town several days this week, and under the Influence of opium and rot-gut' Vinsky, has made a beastly exhibition* of the depravity to which a man can degrade. Tuesday night his condi* tion was very critical, and although he had considerable money, be was refused lodging at one of the hotels, and as the night was very Oold lodging in the streets could not have failed to prove fatal to him. We ate extremely sorry that he will leave Rensselaer, a« he is a number one man. He starts about the first of May. ..... ....... 11 *i Mr. A 1 Rishling, of Lee, handed us a copy of the Rensselaer Gazette of December 14th, 1857, by Dan P, Davies. There are few names in it that are familiar to modern Rensselaer. In another p lace in this paper will be found the advertisement of Mr. J. W. Porter, burner and dealer in lime. Mr. Porter is an old and reliable citizen, and will deal honestly with all persons. •■■■ ■ 1 ■» Dern Bros., whose advertisement appears elsewhere in this paper, are working up a splendid trade in the grocery line. They are honest, industrious and popular men, and are deserving of success. C. G. Sears and Dr. Link, re turned from Dakota last week. They report the country as fairly booming, and appear to be surprised at the high grade of culture to be found in the north-west. April 27th. This will be the rst railroad show that has ever visited pur town and as it is a large show and said to be a good one we predict for it a good day’s ! business here.
