Rensselaer Republican, Volume 14, Number 28, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 30 March 1882 — Fair Fasters in the Lenten Season. [ARTICLE]
Fair Fasters in the Lenten Season.
Lent cannot always be advocated on the score of economy, and what is saved in the way of butter aud meats is more than counterbalanced in oysters* fish and other pleasant indulgences of th&Beason. In New York it is reported that Lent seems a season of feasting not fasting. Public aud private dinners abound, and ladies are busy attending lenten lunches where fish and salads are the chief viands. Without meaning to doubt the sincerity or piety of these fair fastens, who, it may be asked without offense, could not be something of a saint on oysters and shellfish of the Chesapeake, especially when prepared after the most appromethods?—Baltimore Sun. v-. _
