Commissioners' Court.
At the special session of the Board of Commissioners of Jasper county, which convened at the court house, in Rensselaer, Tuesday of this week, the following business was transacted: The advertismentei for bids for the erection of a jail and sheriff's residence were £ound to be in strict accordance with law, notwithstanding the fact that some parties who seemingly were working for some cheap notoriety and a cheaper fee, used their utmost e ideavors Wpick some technical Haw with them, as was done in December. AVhilo it it is true there was a very slight and unimportant error in the advertising for bids at the December session, we believe had the contract been awarded at that time, the jail \ would have been built without any trouble to the county and the expense—extra advertising, special session of Board, advance of 8658 on bid, etc.,t would have been at least 81000 less than the present contract calls for. Bids were received from P. J. Pauly & Bro., of St. Louis, Mo*., and from John Chamberlain, of Rensselaer; the bid of the former being, for the building and iron cells, complete, 811,655, and of the latter, for the same, 811,776. The bid of P. J. Pauly & Bro., being the lowest, wnt accepted, and the bomd filed, with P. J. Pauly A Bro. as principals- and Mordecal p. Chilcote, Ezra C. Rowels, and J. H. Loughridge as suretie. The matter of furnishing heating apparatus for said building was considered, and P. J. Pauly .& Bro. furnished plans for the same, which upon examination, were accepted, and the contract for putting in the same was awarded to the same parties for the - sum as 81018. George M. Rojbiuson was appointed by the Boat'd to superintend v\e construction of the jail and shevitf’s residence. A petition of Lucius Strong, of Rewton township, was presented" to the Board, asking that the surplus railroad tax of that township be transferred to the road fund, which was granted. The matter of building a bridge across the Iroquois river, near the residence of George W. Burk, was taken up, and bids from R. T. Eldridge. and John Chamberlain were received, but the Board considering the bids too high, rejected them, and the bridge will not be Built just yet. The contract for building a bridge near the residence of Hoffman Keene, in Jordan township, was awarded to Wm. M. Garey for the sum $187.50, and G. W. Farmer was appointed to superintend the construction of the same. Sheriff Powell was ordered to build a sidewalk along the wesc side of lot 10 in block 14, in Rensselaer said lot belonging to Jasper county, and the Auditor was instructed to issue warrant for the cost of the same when completed. The commissioners were each allowed $7.00 and the sheriff $4.00 for services at special session. Board adjourned. The second Qarterly Meeting of Rensselaer circuit, M. E. Church, will be held at the M. E. Church in Rensselaer, February 10th, 1882. The Quartarly Conierence will meet at 2 o’clock P. M. on Friday. Preaching Friday , night by the Presiding Elder.

The jury which sat on his'case at Bloom it gton, returned a verdict of guilty.
