If our people would have Rons selaer flourish, they should remember that encouragement to newcomers is one of the chief methods to be adopted. The old idea that a man, because he is a stranger to us, should be distrusted and looked , upon as an interloper and infringer upon our rights, because he wishes to settle among us, should be discarded forever, if such an idea does prevail. We must give up the notion that the “old settler,’’simply because he has had the grit to settle down and stick or because he has uot had enough ambition to get away, is the only man entitled to our consideration. „ Of course, if the said “old settler” is a man of pure character, intelligent, and all these things, he should stand on an equal footing with all other men in. possession of these qualities. lE, on the qther hand, he does ndt t possess these prerequisites, he is . none the more worthy because of his old “citizenship.” I doubt not other regions have produced just as intelligent men as this obscure eorner of the Master’s vineyard, and if any of these individuals should see in Rensselaer what they think is a good - : opportunity for business, they should be encouraged by kind words and acts 1 , •and not discouraged by high rents, exorbitant prices for property, and the frowns and gloomy forebodings of our “leading citizens.” I have known njen who would have been ornaments to any, ,town, tdioome here and look for locations in blanches of business which were sorely needed, and they were driven* *way by one or all these things, ; ; : .-There-is not a truly- interested citizeifrof Rensselaer who-does net expect; to see pur village-grow to a thriving town, and from, thence a prosperous city, at some future day, and he should remember, thatid order to bring about this end we must offer .inducements to new -Hjeni as the progeny of our present .**6ld BetCiers” can hardly .be expeoied to spread ip to “teeming then*duds for at least a generation pr two.
