An Effectual Temperance Lecture
A young man called, in company witii several other gentlemen, upon a young lady. Her father was also prescut to .a.rsist in entertaining the callers. The wiue w &■> retired out. and wo.ufd have bei u drunk, but the young lady asked: " Did. j oil call & »on aie. or upon papa?* v< Gallantry, if nothing else, compelled them to answer: "We called upon j’ou.” "Then you will please not drink wine; for I have lemonade for my caller.*." * The father urged the guests to drink, and they were undecided. The young tally added: "Remember, if you call upon me .then you drink lemonade; but if upon papa, why, then, in .that case, I have uothiug to say.” The wine 'glasses were set down with their contents untasted. After leaving the house one of the party exclaimed: "that is the most effectual temperunci* lecture I have ever heard.” . The young mau from whom theee fuels were obtained broke off at once from the use of strong drink, and is now a clergyman preaching temperance aud religion. He still holds in greatful remembrance the lady who gracefully gave him to understand that her callers could not drink wine.
