If a mao not reasonably well informed in thee brancbm it it fair to infer that he is ia nothin*. A person who does not und r stand anatomy and physiology cannot know what a healthy man is; and if he is not aide te'reeognise a healthy organisation how can he know when he has to deal with a diseased one? The physician nrast eonstan'ly hare in mind the ideal healthy individual so that when he visits the sick he can, by comparison, ascertain and locale the wrong tn the diseased one. In the study of anatomy tbo bones elaim attention first; for the reuson that they form the framework of tbe body, and prelect the vital organs. The bones possess hardness and a certain degree of totkghness, elasticity. By chemical analysis we know they are composed of animal and earthy matter. There being about one part of tbe first to two of the second. The animal matter is composed of gelatin and bloodvessels. The earthy, otnktysphato of lime, silty-one parts, oarbonito, of limo, eleven, and a small portion of calcium, phosphate of magdtem, soda and common salt. The proportions of animal and earthy matter vary at different periodo of life, as the fallowing table will show: child, adult, old age. Animal matter 47 20 18 Earthy matter 48 75 # 84 We learn from this that the bonea are loss liable to fracture in childhood, and adult life than in old age. Wo also know that in old age broken bones unite more slowly than in youth. The physician knows too that in the duense known as rickety, which is not un common in scrofulous children, there s » deficiency in the supply of lime as the process of nutrition is defective, and he ei<dsavore to supply the one and restore the other, or his patient’s bones will ben 1 from the weight of ths body and beoomo. perhaps, a permansnt cripple. The bones are of various forms, described by anatomists as long, short, flat and if reg. ular. They are well supplied with blood vessels which are distributed to the membrane covering the bones and passing through all parts of them. Nerves accompany the blood-vessels. The skeleton is composed of 2Q6 bones including the teeth and some irregular formations, termed bones by some. Toey are classified as belonging to the cranium, 8; ear, 6; face, 14; sptmU column, 26; hyoid, bresrt bone, and ribs, 26; Upper extremities, 64; lower exlremiti es, 62.
