Will people evei discover the fact that high-sounding titles, bombastic swaggering, fine clothes and glittering gems, or earthy riches do atrt make the man. True merit lies in the head and heart. Our constitution recognizee Ibis fact, but alas, too few of our people do. Buy your Groceries at C. C. Starr & Co/s and got good and pure goods. A *** Nocturnal brails are becoming altogether too common on our streets of late. Hideous howls from drunken ghouls rend the midnight air, and revolvers fired, and scenes from Hades enacted generally. Is • there no way by which these offeni ders of the law can be reached? Our town marshal should be vested with power to make arrests, and . the higher authorities should see that he performs his duty.

Of course the lads and i lasses are making pilgrimages to their camp in expectation of discovering forlunes.
At the special session, of the Board of Commissioners the present week, in compliance with an act of the last Legislature, the Board appointed Dr. I. B, Washburn Secretary of the County Board of Health. He will have to act under instructions from the •State Board of Health. A certain gassy meipber of the Jasper county bar, it is reported, went to Monticello last week and had the town board called to the court house, where he laid be fore them a proposition to purchase some $40,000 in bonds on that town. He didn’t want part of the bonds, No; he wanted the whole lot or none. It was a small transaction for him anyhow. The practice of carrying pocket pistols is.followed to an alarming extent by many of the boys and young men of this town. We believe there is a law in this State prohibiting the carrying of con-’ oealed weapons by persons in the ordinary pursuits of life, and we would , recommend that the Prosecuting Attorney investigate this mattered see Chat the Uwb are enforced.
