The Circuit Court.
All of the timber trespass cjttf from the northern part of the county have been disposed of, all of the defendants being acquitted. ! The case of Wm. Hays, charged with assault with intent to commit rape, was, from the gravity of the offense, one of the most important that hwji taken place in the oounty for sometime. Hie trial was baSin Tuesday morning. State’s Atrney Bishopp, assisted by P. W. Babcock, conducted the prosecution, M. P. Ohilcote and J. W. Donthit defending. The case went to the jury at 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon, bnt a verdict wae not agreed upon until nearly. 8 o’clock Sunday morning. The prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to a fine of $1 and two years’ prisonment in the penitentiary. Prom one of the jurors in the case we learn that the sentence would have been much more severe had notone of the twelve been in favor of acquittal. The case of the State against George Worden, for assault with intent to commit murder on the person of Wm. H. Rhoades, came up for hearing Monday morning. Messrs. Bishopp and Babcock appearing for the State and Messrs. S. P. Thompson and Wm. Justin for the defense. The case was closely contested and admirably conducted. The case was given to the jury Tuesday evening, they remaining out all night and not finding a verdict until 4 o’dlOek Wednesdoy evening, when they found the prisoner “not guilty. The verdict was well received.
