Wild hay making still continues. The hum of the sickle is heard in every marsh. , Horse flies swarm over the horses like bees. The dry weather increases the number of flies but dimishes the mosquito crop. A petition will be presented to the Bpard of Commissioners ai their next sitting, from this township; asking that our hogs may graze upon the commons. We hope they will give this their earnest attention, ever keeping an eye single to our welfare, recollecting that we have plenty of acorns and hazel nuts that would otherwise go to waste, and that there will be an abundance of range between farms until the township is more densely
populated.

Tassixong, Porteb Co., Ind., ) August Bth, 1881. f Editors and Friends of The Republican :—lt has been stated in the paper several times that I intended to spend a while with my sister in Porter county. lam now enjoying the eampaay of herself and family and many other highly esteemed friends of this vicinity. 1 did not find the health here very good. The cause of so much sickness is supposed to be the extremely hot, dty weather we are having. A great many deaths have occurred lately, mostly children. The thermometer stood very high all last week. Friday it was 112 in the shade. Saturday it looked like rain, but cleared off without giving ns a call. But the air is much cooler to-day. ' The crops will be cut a little short on account of the drouth. Com. iw about the same as in Jas- ! per. Fruit is very scarce. There will be imm apples but not hwjf * crop. I visited Valparaiso last week and found businees llvriy. Everyone seemed to have something to do, especially* the street scrapers sad sprinklers.- The schools there are in active progress. Prof. Banta, principal of the Vaiporaiso high school, is holding a term of seven weeks for the accommodation of young teachers and a few others that desire to better prepare themsehoss for tbs coming fall and 1 win-
And on Monday evening, 22d inst, they will have a graduating exercise for those who have attended the school. They anticipate a grand time. I have not heard how the Rensselaer school is prospering, but I fesi very much interested in it, andwish it the best of success. I know that Jasper county has the Superintendent and teachera to make On interesting school. I only regret that I cannot be in your midst. I think from what I can learn of the common schools of Porter that Jasper can cope with them.
Mrs. 8. Pierce, and the children, Ida Sebring, Minnie Tass and Merton Welch, are on the sick list The former is recovering slowly, but the children do not seem to get along very well. Samuel Williamson is very low with something like consumption. He has been sick for several yeafo, but seems to be getting worse, I Rave been speaking about the city of Valpo. Perhaps I had better come a little nearer home and say something about our little town of Tassinong. This “great” place is located six milao north of the Kankakee river. It consists of two blacksmith shops, one wagon shop, two stores, a doctor, postoffioe, church, and families. Entire population, fifty-six. Business is lively here, especially when all the children in town get in the middle of the street playing in the dirt, and a runaway team comes along. •
As I haven’t been around very much yet I will close for this time by saying that Porter is prospering finely.
Yours,
