Meditating Jay Gould’s Death.

N.Y. Sun. 4 “I was standing in Wall street on Friday, with my overcoat over my arm, «aid a broker yester lay, “when I saw Jay Gould start to cross thestreet. A Broadway stage was coming down the street full tat, and the driver was having hard work to manage his horses. Other vehicles were coining up, and Jay Gould, seemingly abstracted, started to cross between the approaching teams. I did not see how he could escape being crushed. His death seemed certain if of the stage struck him. What was the best thing for me to do?. I thought. I spread out my overcoat, and made up my mind that ' he was knocked down and run over . would dart out, throw nry overcoat around his head so that nobody could see who he was, then drag him.into a back basement office, jump in and sell all his stocks short by the thousand shares. It was all as clear as' a photograph, and the whole scheme Hashed through my mind in an instant. I moved up toward him. The vehicles coming up the street blocked the way beyond a certain path, along which came the timbering stage with its unruly horses and dangerous pole. Jay Geuld cleared the sidewalk and was about to make another step. I shook out my over coat to have# ready. As he leaned forward, a’ passer-by, who did not know him, but who saw the danger, grabbed him and pulled him back. The stage coach rolled by, and Gould, then appreciating the danger, shook the hand of the man who had rescued him, uttered a word of thanks, and passed on. I folded up myovercoat, turned into New street, and.lighting a fresh cigar, meditated upon the evanescence of fortune.” .
