The Senatorial Contort.
XJ Albany, N. Y., July 6. Th# convention met at noon. President pro tern. Robertson, presiding. Mr. Hasted offered resolutions in condemnation of the attempted assassination of President Garfield and expressive of sympathy with fbe President apd his family/ which were adopted unanimously by a rising vote. Tne convention men balloted for a United States Senator in place of Mr. Conkling for the short term. The combined vote was: Potter (Democrat) 53; WheelAy42;, Crowley, 6; Rogers, 4; Conkling* 32; Cornell, 6; Lapham, 11; Folger, 1. No choice. The Convention proceeded to*'vote' for a Senator for the long team vacancy. Following Is the combined vote: Kernan (DemT), 62; Depew, 53; Cornell, 18; Chapman, 4; Crowley, 9; Fish, 1; Wheeler, 2; North, 1; Roberts I; Daniels, 1; Tremaine, 1; Lapham, 1. No Choice. * In the Assembly, Speaker Sharpie, after alluding to the fraternal action taken by the Democratic 'members of. the Leglsture yesterday, in relation to the late great crime, offered the following on behalf of the whole House: Whikias, a great crime has been committed In the city of WaehitigSon, whereby the Use of the Chief Magistrate of the nation has been imperiled, a happy and loving family cast Into profound fiief, and the heart of a great and patriotic people bowed in sorrow: therefore be It IteeOlved, That the Assembly of the State of New York does hereby .express its deep condemnation of this foul deed, attempted murder, as revolting to the moral sense oj the civilized world) 1 * 2. That this Assembly, recognizing in Jamea A. Garfield a Chief Magistrate sincerely dealrona of ful filling the reaponalbTfe dntlea or his high office with loyal regard to tne interests of the whole country, dogs hereby tender him its profound sympathy; and respect, and the assurance that witp humble submission to Divine Providence, the Assembly does most eat neatly hope for his speedy return to health and fpliut exere else of the duties to Which the people call eg. him.
3. That to the family of the President, and especially to his heroic and devoted wife, we tender our heartfelt condolence and assurance of our sympathy and regard. 4. That a copy or these resolutions, properly attested, be forwarded to the Secretary of State of the United States, with the request that hetay them before the President and his family at such time as he may deem suitable. The resolutions were adopted unanimously by a rising vote. Mr. Phillips, on a question of privilege, pronounced as false the published statement that the proposed conference on theSenatorship of Republicans was a trap, and proceeded to say it was a proposition originating with himself in good faith. He found here two factions holding each other at bay, and it was hoped to bring them into unity of action.
The Chairman had a notice read announcing that, in accordance with a call signed by sixty-five members, the Republicans would meet in conference this evening at 8 o’clock tfkendeavor to agree upon candidates for United States Senators.
