The long severe winter has been very destructive to bees every where. Wherever they have been at all exposed to the weather, few have survived. , Bees should be well housed as well as horses and other stock. >: People from Switzerland are docking to this place in increasing numbers. Nearly every train from the east brings a quota, and we are informed that one thousand are now on the way, all of whom propose to locate in Crown Point and vicinity.r—[Crown Point Register.
The Winamac Republican ifitimates tliet as the time for the town election draws near, the'Marshal makes no street improvements, thus avoiding any outlay of the people’s money, and expecting by this to gain favor and secure his reelection. Our marshal is not made of that kind of material, but poshes improvements as though we were not to have an election in the nerxt century. Some substantial improvements are being made in our streets. It has been recently discovered that Yorktown was all undermined during the late war and electric batterries connected with dynamite explosives plapetfin position. This was done while the Federal commanders made their headquarters in- the town, and were intended to accomplish the destruction of these officers The explosives have lain in that position ever since, the citizens of the town all unconscious of the terrible power which at a touch could be made to blow them all into eternity, v
. The Rochester 'Sentinel rejoices the boom thatlls given it just now, by the merchants of that place in the way of advertising. The merchants themselves will no doubt have cause to rejoice at the benefits they will derive in the increase of their business. A newspaper like any - other legitimate business must have patronage to perpetuate its existence. They who appreciate the value of the existence of v newspaper in their midst realize that they have a personal interest in its perpetuation and that to a certain extent they are personally responsible for its 1 ively support. It is shameful to the country which has tolerated it. Its existence is a fiat contradiction of our boast of progress and civilization.
Religion can not be pleaded in justification of a felony without woful consequences, if the plea is admitted. Strange to say, there has been a quasi admission of that plea on the part of our Government, and the evil results are becoming apparent. It ia urged that trials of the crimes of polygamy in Utah are useless, because of the partisan complexion of juries and the minatory attitude of the Mormons. The polygamist criminals, however can be removed to any place Congress may direct, to be tried according to the terms of the Constitution touching crimes committed in a Territory There is really no excuse for the continued license given to the beasts of Utah, and no political party can, with safety or honor to itself, seek to obstruct the enforcement of the laws of common decency.
Carlyle's Reminiscences.
“By special arrangement" with the American public, the Literary Revolution will issue immediately a beautiful Acme edition, elegant clothbinding, of the “Reminiscence# erf Thomas Carlyle,” price 30 cents postage 6 cents, and it can be had of the nearly 2,000 booksellers who are agents of the Literary Revoluion in all parts of the United States. Thomas Carlyle, more than any other man of the nineteenth century. taught the American public, and people of good sense throughout the world, to despise pretense and humbug whether exhibited by monarch or menial. Sensible people who want a good book at an honest price will buy it where they find it. There is in this country no law which gives to a foreign author, as it gives to an American, the right of the monopoly of the publication of his book. If publishers choose to pay a foreign author anything, they can do it only as a “donation," because he can give them in return no protection from competition. Readers have the privilege of making 6uch donation, if they chose to do so without paying it to the publishers and trusting to the possibility of their paying it to the author for them. There is no donation included in the price above named. Readers who want to combine a possible donation and a positive price, can get an edition of this same book from other publishers at from two to eight times the price.
