Yankee.
The word “Yankee” is older than the New England Colonies, and was used by Samoset in his historical “Welcome, Englishmen.” “Welcome Yenghese" was what be actually said; being the nearest approach the Indian tongue could make to the word “English.” Yankees anti English are synonymous terms; and the word was applied to the northern English colonists by the Indians to distinguish them from the French on one side, and the Dutch on the other. The latter people soon adopted toe term; and it was readily accepted by the New-Englanders themselves. It was never considered a term of reproach, but rather on* of honor, by toe colonists.
