Parted Lovers.
They were very fond of each other,'and had been engaged; but they quarreled, and were too proud to make it up. He called a few dap ago at her tether's house to see the old gentleman, on buaitoess, of course. She was at the door. Said he- ‘‘Ah, Miss Blank, I believe; is your fother in r’ “No, sir,” she replied; “pa is out at presont. Did you wish to see him personally?” “Yea,” was the bluff' response, feeling that she was yielding, “on very particular personal business,” and he turned proudly to go away. “I beg your pardon,” she called after him, as ho struck the lower step, ‘'bat who shal I say called ?” lie never smiled again. To expect to be great without haring enemies is to expect trees to shed their fruit without being “pelted.”
