If General Garfield had been in fact a holder ot that stock, instead of #320, there would have been due to him from first to last, and prior to the investigation) about #5,000 in acorued profits. Gen. Garfield was poor, and will anybody suppose that lie would not hav# availed himself of that ready money which, on the Auns theory, was his of right? If the Committee had known before what it subsequently knew no such report would hceve been made , If Geii.Gaifield had come before us with the statement which he subsequently made, and which was true, our report would have bean and it would not have reflected even inferenlially on Gar* field. The Committee- did not be lieve that he had dons a wrong and wewere satisfied that Ames had been praticing bis great ahrewd. ness, but the testimony was such as to give the report the turn it took. Gen. Garfield made a mistake in not coming beforo ns With the statement he altcrwarda made-'

You know how high publh opinion was running at the time and Garfield had reached that poinwhere he thought hi* continuatioi in public life a public necessity That very thing led him to plac himself iu a false position. Bi t when he came te himself, aud tnad« his real exlpanalion, the people ol his own district, who uew hiu beet, again showed their cunfi.lenc< in him. His district is proud oi h in, and would havo sent him t* Congress as long as ho would hav> consented to serve. There is n< doubt about Garfidd’s being elected, and he ought to be. He is tin broadest man of his tune, a scholar a statesman, and an honest man Broach what subject you will and you will find him informed on it He is warm hearted, generous, am binds men to him by bis nobility of character. But he is no i olitioian, and I dont think he eie- will be one, but it is uot necessaiy for the PresiJeut t> be a politician^—-h# can command all the, volu tal ent he may want in that line.”
