The Last Issue.
As we come before our readers in this the last issue of the Republican proceeding the election |we wish to lay a tew plain words of caution before our readers. Not since Morton was governor has the prospects f for Republican success, in the state election been better than now provided we can have a full Foie, a tree and fair ballot and a fair count, and no illegal votes cast.
There are excellent reasons for encouragement. Four years ago there was disaffection among republicans because ot the withdrawal of Orth from the bead of the tieket and the substitution of Gen. Harrison, moves which io themselves were well enough, but like all other changes tend to create difference of opinion. The withdrawal of Wolcot from the head of the Green buck ticket was unjustly charged to republicans. Many republicans lost interest and remained away from s the polls because of these things. At the same time democracy was united to a man on their candidate the present governor of the State, There was not a dissenting voice among Dem ocr itß any where to bp heard. In this campaign the condition of as fairs ij altogether different. There is not a voice of dissension among Republicans as to the can’ didacy of that eminent tsatesman, profound financier and man of the people, Albert G. Porter. The unanimous support of Indiana Republicans is accorded him, and many honest Democrats and Greenbackera, who believe in fair elections and the freedon of opinion throughout the republic will give him their support.
How is it with the Democratic candidate? All over the State is heard murmuring* in his own parly. The Polandersln the South Bend wagon shope renounce tbeir allegiance to his ticket. The, miners of Clay and Fountain discard him as untrustworthy. The glass makers of New Albany regard him as unworthy ot their support. The honest yeomanry ofHendricks, Marion, Han cock and Shelby counties, the Launts of his boyhood and youth, regard him with utter contempt. And even the New Albany LedgerStandard, for many years the leading Democratic paper in southern Indiana, aud a staunch Hancock organ, denounces him as not entitled to the slightest confidence. He has coquetted formerly with Greeubackers. For this rvason many Democrats will scratch him. His Greenback proclivities gave him, ago, great power with many members of that party, and under bis influence they voted for Williams And the Democratic ticket. .But his known treason to the Greenback party, has forfeited for him confidence with that organ ization, and its members will not be led to support- him now. This is not all. Many honest Democrats and Greenbackers voted in favor of the adoption, last April of the con stitulional amendments, in the hope of doing sway with tbe-outrageous frauds that were charged by each parly upon the other. But the immense majority with which this ainendinent was adopted was of no avail with the three Democratic judges who after a hasty discussion and a previously prepared decision,, for political purposes, defeated the; expressed will of die people-io the overthrow of this amendment. An indignant and outraged people will express their disapproval at the poll J.
■ This is the position of the ttto i parties in t e State to day and the condition ui politics. The L'erno* cratic leaders in amazement and despair recognize the fact and are taking advantage of every means possible to counteract the defeat that stares them in the face. The honest voters should realise that the case is a desperate one with the Democracy, and remember that no little instrumentality will be considered, by them, too small not to be utilized to defeat the will of the majority. Remember that here in Jasper county and in Marion town ship are men temporarily residing, who do not belong here, who boldly declare their intention of voting □ext Tuesday. We call on Republicans to be watchful and see to it that every one of these illegal s voters, no matter for whom he might vote, if be attempa to vote,isarrest-r ed, and that he me£U the fate of Wilkerson of Jeuninga county.
