General Weaver says it? was impossible to get a- fait* count In Alalama. Remember that Toombs said: “If Htnccck ia dieted the Southern boys will rnn tlfe machine.” Dr. ElijahXewland a Democratic cx-treasuscr* of state has repudiated Landers, and come* out for Porter and live Republican state ticket. Wp-hope the Democrats will keep Jim Plunkett on the stump. We understand that lie is making Republic in votes wherever he goes. J. Keiser, editor.of the Winamao Republican , is the nominee of the Republicans of Carroll, White and Pulaski counties for state senator. Landers is going to debate with Porter in The Democrats should get a bushel basket and a shatter for Landets. —Inter Ocean. •SeveiiiY-ave workman in the De Pauw glassworks, at New Albany, heretofore Democratic, will vote the Republican national and state tick* ets this full.
If Ekinntr >» unable to define bit position a* to the state and national ticket, how can honest voters expect him to effect anything definite hi legislation. , Wade Hampton says that be ‘‘is perplexed and almost discouraged.” To honest people who have regard lor the purity of the ballot this will be cheering news. The courts will have full dockets after the' presidential eleotion. English will then sue for libel all newspapers that have made unfavorable mention of him. The exodus of Democrats in southern Indiana to the Republican ranks is creating a panic in the Democratic camp. Landers is re pndiated where he is best known* lion. J. N. Arman trout of Clinton ooanty was nominated By tbs Greeubaekers,. August 275th, at Lebanon, candidate for congress from the ninth district. There are now three Greenback congressional candidates that the lodiknapolis Sun indorses but Skinner is not one of vbem. » r
- Refering to Mr. Landers, the WrtF Albany Ledger- Democratic ssys: “Bet wbat have fro got? Jfh bolter, disorganizer, a flat looatie, an illiterate, stupid demagogue a coffee bouae, street corner nrxi r, and a man of whom every high minded Democrat ia ashamed. Why should a Democratic candidate for aheriff ran the gate to keep from paying hia way into the the Remington fair. If it probable that a man would make aoch an ak tempt in his sober moment*? Truly Remington whiskey needeth rectifying if it ha* tbe effect to cause peo pie to make anch nnrearonable at tempts. Frank Landers indorses the Republican party. In a recent speech at Bedford he aaid:'*““l have al ways been in favor of a sound policy, and since tbe Republican party has carried us to tbe point where wc now eland, we can’t afford to get away from it.” And afterward being questioned aa to whether be did make tbe statement replied, that he did and said: When I tell the truth I always stick to it.
James Greenback or What-not” candidate for Prosecuting Attorney has been ove r in Newton connty with Jim Plunkett confusing the minds of the people over there, on the political ifaties. James, aa yon hope for success don't go with Plunkett he's too reokless. Why, he even tried the other day at the fair to make a few honest voters that knew better, that George W. Julian—apostate Julian —renegade Jolian was a Republican. Too thin Jim. Too thin.
Democrats like to talk of raissionsand rant that the Republican party has completed its mission. We think not. The Republican party ia the party of progress and cnltnro. It is tbe party that fosters the pnb lie aohool and encourages the dissemination of knowledge, and until school houses are as numerous throughout tbe South and intelligence as widely diffused aa in tbe North, then and not. till then may the mission of the Republican party be said to be fulfilled.
The De oorata have caused a motion for a rehearing in the amendment case to be filed in the Supreme Court. Tbe motion will not be de. cided until after the October elec lion. If tbe Democrats succeed the motion will be overruled. If the Republicans win the rehearing will be grauted, but the case will not be decided until after the No vember election, when the Democrats will again vote for State officers and Congressmen. Tbe original decision will then be reversed and the Dernecratio officers voted for in November will be declared elected This is, without doubt, the pro' gramme of tbe Democratic leaders' Laga>< sport Journal.
i In 1868, tbe Democratic platforms declared that tie reconstruction acts, including of coarse the con. stitutional amendments, “were rev olutionary aad void,” and Hancock: who received, in the convention of that year, 144 votes as candidate for president, wrote a letter to Mr. Glover cordially endorsing the platform. This year tbe Democracy takes tbe* opposite ground on the constitutional amendments, and Gen. Hancock cordially endorses tbe platform. He is but clay in tbe hands of the potter. He is a man of putty in the hands of the party. He lets the party do his political thinking, and expeois to be its willing tool in its uncertain and peril* ous march toward* power, and its chief instrument of mischief should the country be compelled to endnre the calamity of its socoess.— LaPorte Herald - Chronicle.
Grand Rally at Fowler.
\ We had the pleasure to attend the Republican rally at Fowler last Monday. It was indeed a grand day for the Republican party. The people of Fowler and Benton county never do things by halves. As early as ten o'clock the streets were thronged with teams and the sidewalks with people from the country, and citizens of the town all eager to bear of Garfield, Porter and Glory.
It bad been annonneed that Por. ter would be there, bat a dispatch late Saturday evening atated that he coaid not be present. Bat Mark L. D«Motte and Major John W, Gordon, Oliver T. Morton, the son of the great war governor and Gen. Pitkin, of Louisiana, werejthere a grand galaxy, exponent of pure Re publican principles. Mr. De Motte led off at 2 o’clock P. M. in an eloquent speech which was listened to with inteneo interest by a crowd o* more than fifteen hnndred people* until a black cloud rising in the West dispersed the multitude. At that time the train from Indianapolis arrrvrd bearing the other speakers mentioned. Thie clouds having passed by, Major Gordon spoke more than an boar, from the front of the Summit House to a latge audienoe gathered in the street. Undo Charley Davis with the Kentlsnd' Glee Club wsa there and favored the people with some lively campaign songs. Uncle Charley

The brass bands of ’Oxford and Fowler wan on band and at intervals enlivened the occasion with some fine music. With the men bars of the Fowler band and ita history we are acquainted and we were agreeably anrpriaed at tbe rapid progress this band bad made. In our estimation, it eompares favorably with the best bands that we have ever listened to. In the evening, speeches were delivered to an appreciative audience by Oliver T. Morton and General Pitkin. Tbe demousi ration at Fowler gives evidence that the Repot* I'leans of Benton are alive to the importance of the situation and de lermined to do their part for the success of the Repnbiican ticket.
The Story of That Affidavit.
When honest means fail to beat a man, rascals always are ready for some other plan. This waa the dia ease that the Democrats bad, when ’gainst Powell they tried to find some truth that was bad. At Rem* ington they met in solemn conclave, In headquarters at one of the aaloons we soppoae. This we judge from tne appearance on tneir faces of the rose which from what we have heard in childhood we think, is cansed by imbibing too much of the drink that inebriates and makes out of men otter fools who in the hands of villians and tricksters become tools. And with heeds close to gethor they then tried to see it they could not on a diabolical plan agree, and one onto tbe other said; "Let’s slyly workor wearedead. The‘rep’ of Powell is beyond a douot, and men all over the county have found it out. Destroy this ‘rep*, we must and'oan.” For tbis-self-appointed—-one Rich was the man. And now it happened (jnst how we don’t care) that Veres the Kentuckian waa at the Remington fair. Bill, on the alert and full(?) of pluck(?), seeing Wesley Veres, said, “now ain’t I in in luck!” Some time ago —no matter why, John Powell struck me a whack in the eye. To be revenged on thie l*m bent. Honor, manhood are not worth a continental cent. Wei Veres ’ll not scruple to make affidavit, to what 4 ask—Gad—l’id bound I’ll have it. So quick to Wes his steps he bent. AmPVeres he informed why he was sent. Said he to Veres yon know that John a dishonest mission was □ ever on, but he’s Republican candidate for sheriff yon see, and that ’ll never do fur we. To ruin this wan ’ll be worth n Nickel. For straight out truth I don’t give a pickle. “Make affidavit Wesley,” he lovingly raid. “That John in a trade always tried to keep ahead.” credulous public ’twill ruin his case, as a candidate for any important public piace. Now Wesley in Kentucky had lived long enough to engage in the game and was right up to snuff. To William he said I’ll make the affidavit, provided you faithfully promise to save it, and in public refrain from showing to the boys t’ill I return safe to the sta'e of Illinois. And so by a notary the paper was made, all ready for use in the beautiful shade of the Remington fair where all the boys, had met to have eliuck-a-luck and horseracing joys. Bill in thirst for revenge now eagerly displayed the crooked affidavit that Veres had just made. And not over cautious to whom he then spoke, to a friend of John Powell’s he privately broke the ne.vs and to this man he cunningly said, while a wolfish Emile played o’er the front of his head, I’ve got something now John Powell will find, that’ll make him in the rear fall badly behind. And Erwin the cattle buyer will keep it a goin, for a deputyship be baa a bope that’s a growin. But contrary to tbe plan of these eute little fellows, they find that some one ’gainst this right ont Bellows. At this much dismayed Riob began to be afraid. And that John would keep quiet he earnestly prayed. But John’s answer was “no” to old Nick you may go. The paper traveled on as it's doing to-day. And John will not endeavor to check its vile way. For to (hose who first gave this low thing ita life. It wll( Ere long return and array them in strife among their own discordant selves, and lay them forever on high, dry shelves. _ This is the story of the affidavit not probably as intended by Rich .and Go.- But tbe complete hietoty to the present writing notwithstanding.

T’s, life is not altogether cheerlesa for the 8. IPs. They have their little gathering! and merrymakings and really seem to enjoy them. Political matters are progressing. The oanse of right which means the Republican party, will doubtless triumph this fall. We have not the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with the other candidates for the oonnty offices, but we pan say from onr own knowledge that Mr. J. W.' Powell, Republican candidate for sheriff is s gentleman in every way qualified to fill acceptably the responsible position which he seeks.
