When Hancock is Elected “This D—d Foolishness Will Stop.*’ The following letter is official: Mowtgomeby, Ala., August 11,1880. To M. C. Osl»om. U. 8. Marshal for the Southern and Middle Distriota of Alabama: Sir—ln accordance with your Instructions I took the warrants of Penton et al., of Andalusia, in Covington eonnV, charged with beating and intimidating United States witneasee. and destroying processes from the United States Court. I proceeded with three deputies on the 7th instant to Andalusia, in Covington county, arriving there on Monday morning at daylight. I found that they had been notified of our approach. aad had collected a force of from twenly-flve to fifty men. armed with double-bar-reled shot-guns and pistols, and collected in a bar-room belonging to and kept by Penton. I went Into the room and notified Penton I had a warrant for hte arrest, and thut be would have te go with me to Moutgntaety. The crowd immediately collected arout d me, when Pen ton declared that be would not submit to an arrest or go to Montgomery until he was carried by foree. I told bim that be Would be compelled to go, and my advice to htm was to go qnsetlr, and obey the law. His reply was: "Did yon come here expecting to take anybody with that pitiful foree you have got there," alluding to the deputies I had with me. I answered him, “that where law and order prevailed it was unnecessary to have anv force at all, that the freouent declarations that the country was peaceable and inclined to ooev the law, had led me to believe that they would submit without resistance.” He replied: “I will fight you to the last extremity before you shall take off any one from here to-dav; when we elect our President. Haneock. this d-d foolishness will stop. TJje United States have no right to interfere with this county tn its matters.” I said to him. "If you contemplate resistance to the death.
