This being the flrat festival of the Mason It ia hoped the boys will be' liberally patronised. A good band is one of the most useful and enjoyable institutions a town can have, and every citizen should be wll* ling to contribute to Its support The Black Carte*ere* at the Cheap Store, are selliag very rapidly. Aa many as Sr* alee patterns being ent la one day. This is proof positive of their cheapness. —We are informed that a young “masher” who escorted bis heart’s idol home from the temperance meeting for the first time, last Friday evening, remarked to her about as follows: "There are only three women in this world that I love. One Is dead, one is married and the other is you. Many a night I’ve wet my pillow thinking about you.” His fair adored being unable to appreciate such undying devotion repeated the story next day to a married friend, and through channels of gossip found Its way to this office. Young men who blubber such stuff to the girls only succeed in giving themselves away, and the young ladiss conclude that suckers are not worth fishing for. —Last week we simply mentioned the fact that Joseph Willet, the proprietor of "Red Hell” saloon, had “got up and. got.” He enjoyed a very liberal patronage, and it was thought by some that be was adding to his wealth. It haa since been revealed that the old man became financially “basted,” or rather that his patrons | confiscated and spirited away bis property in a manner that seemed to him very mysterious They say he was a | regular “old mutton bead,” and could j comprehend bat one idea at a time, so that while one or more would engage him in conversation the’ third party would wag off a box of cigars or roll out a keg of beer. In this manner bis stock in trade was constantly diminishing. and the old man was compelled to quit the business or seek a place lees spooky. TbeSboe* at the CbeapStore are acknowledged liy all to to the very cheapest aad best ever brought to Rensselaer. —Prof. P. V. B. Smith, of Peru, is here Instructing the Rensselaer Cornet Band. He is an experienced teacher and already the boys have made great improvement in their playing. He has also furnished them with several pieces of new music, and within a few weeks the public will begin to appreciate their efforts. We are still of the opinion that a suitable I band-room should be furnished at the expense of the corporation. A band is a public benefitr—in fact a public necessity—aud should not the public I help to support it? Other towns do j ao, and why not Rensselaer? Only j those experienced in keeping up a j band organisation have a correct con- ! ception of the labor, expense and | time required necessary to make it a success, and If the oitizens demand itsservicee from time to time without remuneration ora word of inofturagement it is not. surprising that the members should manifest but little interest Now that a new move has been made we hope it will meet with much encouragement, and that the advancement will beT-permanent' . , Why will you trade with old fogy, high priced loag credit bouses, when you can trade at a wide awake Cheap Store. Sach aa one is tbe great Cheap Store of Sharpe, Gray A Co. Ton sare on your purchases from 10 to SO per cent. It pays. —Last Wednesday night some two or more parties at tbe leap-year dance became thirsty and skipped down to Goddard’s saloon. During their stay they discovered what they supposed be a couple of robbers. The proper authorities were Informed and the next day, Harry, the little Englishman, was arrested.. His partner, Billy, hft town aqqn after, very uusermonioosly, but he returned in oompany with Sheriff Robinson, later in the evening. They were tried before his honor, ’Squire Wood, and bound over to appear before the Judge of the Jasper Court in the sam of three hundred dollars each. Harry’s story to that hearing some parties below, in the saloon, he rattled the door for admission, but no oDe coming to let himself and Billy in, they went around the bailding and he crawled into the building through a window. We are unable to say bow near correct this statement may be, but those who axe more familiar with the ci reams tan oes conclude that it is about tree. Nothing was found against Billy, the tailor, on this charge, but a suspicion arose that possibly he bad purloined other articles from other parties. Search revealed a couple of cigar boxes coder the rear steps of the tailor shop and a pises of doth belonging to on§of Mr. Jones’s customers, In BJHy’f'tnink. Each were unable' to furnish the proper security for their appearance at court and were placed in durance vile for safe keeping. Public opinion to that the offenses committed wars not raflleienUy criminal In character to justify the expense neeeasary. end k would have been for move profitable to have permitted to parties to migrate to some other eou&ty. The farmers are just beginning to realise the neeessity of thorough ditching, and during the coming three years a large amount of that kind of work will be accomplished. —Dr. Washburn and Dr. Bitters have dissolved partnership. The last named has united bis fortunes with Dr. Loughridge. Dr. B. has been very successful In tbe treatment of Ills patients, and his practice has been reasonably extensive. This lice will take in Pilot Grove and Goodland. Should the road be completed, as it now seems highly probable, It will be damaging td Rensselaer.. It should be built from Goodland to this place and thence to the Garden City. —Hon. Daniel Gray, of Newton county, was iu town last week, looking np his candidacy. He is seeking to represent Jasper and Newton counties in the State legislature this winter. He is a farmer by occupation and has been a resident of Newton for about twelve years. In 1860 he was a member of the New York Legislature, and has since served the good people of Newton as county commissioner. —Mr. Charles H. Price, the genial clerk of Jasper county, manipulator of Greenbackers in this section of the congressional district, It is said, ooold have Informed the average Democrat two week before the Democratic county convention met that it would be postponed In order to throw the Greenback party In tbe lead. Charles is a shrewd politician, but playing ringmaster for two shows with the task of occasionally stirring up the animals, will prove too great a strain on his nerves. —Last Sabbath —Decoration Day—was ushered In a oold rain, and tbe Indications were that it would continue al| day. Near noon tbe storm ceased and the managers of the decoration exercises concluded they would carry oat the programme in the afternoon.
