SUBTLE.

How tlse Late Caller Waa Induced to Hurry Away. This may not be a new way of getting rid of a persistent caller, but it has certainly not grown stale by application and has the Interest of a recent local occurrence. The father’s business takes him out of town a good deal, and the daughter has a caller with whom there is an understanding that is only the final stage before the engagement The other night the father served general notice that he must take an early train and must be called for It That same evening came the fortunate young man referred to. By 10 the old gentleman had the fidgets and rapidly reached the conclusion that his comfort was a minor consideration In that household. This Is not true, but It Is a conviction that frequently seizes the head of a family when he is out of sorts. He slammed several doors as a reminder to the caller. He raised the same noisy window three times, and it always makes more noise when being lowered. He put out lights wherever they were not an absolute necessity, called to the younger children that It was high time they were asleep and dropped a shoe every three or four minutes with a hope that It would serve a hint. When everything else had failed and his patience was about exhausted, he went to the top of the stairs and shouted, “Jennie, did or did I not tell you to call me at 4:30, so that I could get my train V “You told me, papa.” “Why In creation didn’t you attend to it, then?” For less than a minute there was some tall hustling below stairs, and one could have heard a pin drop while the caller was making his sneak Into outer darkness.—Detroit Free Press.

The Returned Prodigal.

“No, suh,” said the returned colored prodigal, “dey ain’t so much room fer de cullud man in Boston ez what dey makes out” “Been there, have you?” “Yes, suh, en mighty glad ter git back!” “What was the trouble?” “Trouble ‘nuff, suh, I tell youl I hearn tell dey wuz takin de cullud folks In han en supportin of ’em right en lef*; but dey soon lemme know dat I wuz clean mistook; I thought I’d Jlne wid what dey calls de ‘literary folks’ up dar, but dey kicked me out Den I gone ter speech makln, but dey wara’t nobody tu’n out ter heah me ’cept de janitor en two perlicemen. En, would you b’lieve it suh, I couldn’t even git a place ez teacher in one er de high schools!” —Atlanta Constitution.

A Beauty’s Trials.

“I would rather marry him,” said Gabrielle simply. “I prefer him to you.” Here Josand tears his hair, but only for a moment. “Then I shall die in order that he may live!” he now cries, his figure dilating with the generous resolve. “No, no, nol” protests Gabrielle,' clasping .her hands convulsively. “If you do, I shall doubtless at once prefer you!” Ah, what a trial It la to be a beautiful woman, not particularly In France, but anywhere.—Detroit Journal.

A Limit.

“Now,” said the careful newspaper man as he showed the statesman an Interview, “you are quite sure you said all this?” “Yes,” was the reflective answer; “I’m sure I said It, but I can’t be sure about how long I’ll remember I said it,’*—Washington Star.

Willing to Oblige.

Hlx—Young Dr. Plllsbury doesn’t seem to have much of a practice. Dlx—No; but there Is one thing to be said in bis favor. Hix—What la that? Dlx—He Is willing to practice ©n anybody that will let him.—Chicago News,

Ups and Downs.
