ATTEMPTED JAIL BREAKING.
Charlie Smith, of Newton County, Tries to Saw His Way Out of Jail. Charlie Smith, who was sent here from Newton county for safe keeping after breaking out of the calaboose at Kentland, attempted tb regain his liberty Saturday evening by sawing his way out of jail. He was confined in one of the outside cells in the front part of the jail, and as a precaution against escape shackles were placed on his legs at night. Smith had managed to secrete a case knife and using this as a saw he had freed himself of the shackles and had sawed one of the bars from the window, when he was discovered. Some boys who were prowling around the jail discovered him at work and notified Sheriff Hardy, who quickly placed him in safe quarters. Smith is charged with stealing clothing at Brook.
