T-he public schools of Rensselaer will open next Monday. Chas. Wood, of Chicago, was the guest of T. J. McCoy last week. daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Willis Hurley, of Aix, Friday. Miss Ethel Perkins will teach in the public schools of Qoodland this year. Mrs. A. D. Swain, of Morocco, was • the guest ot Mrs. M. L. Spitler last week. The Chicago Bargain Store received a car load of Michigan peaches yesterday. J. A. McFarland has moved into the former Mrs. Tutuer property on Cornelia street. Just received, a car load of hominy meal, also a car load of bran at the Rensselaer Feed Store. The Union township Republican convention has been postponed until Saturday, September 13th. W. A. Green had his foot badly mashed last Saturday by falling from a wagon, which ran over it. Mr. and Mrs. George Keever, living west of town, left on Tuesday for a prospecting trip to South Dakota. The Monon will make a rate of one fare for the round trip to the Odd Fellows’ picnic at Water Valley next Saturday. The Odd Fellows will have a big picnic at Water Valley next Saturday. A large number will be in attendance from here. Rev. D. A. Tucker, of Hortonsville, Wis., former pastor of the Free Baptist church here, is visiting Rensselaer friends this week. Prof. Reuben Halleck, one of the instructors at the teachers’ institute, will lecture to the teachers’ institute at the M. E. church this evening. There was a large crowd from Rensselaer fishing at the Kankakee Sunday. Fish are being caught in abund ance there and nearly every fisherman comes home with a big string of fish. The Jasper County Teachers’ Institute is in session and is being largely attended. The instructors are Messrs. Holland, Halleck and Eichorn. County Superintendent Hamilton is pre siding. S. E. Yeoman represents the Hooker, Wyman & Co. nursery, of Rochester, N. Y., one of the best nurseries in the east. He is now taking orders for fall delivery. All stock is guaranteed and stock dying will be replaced free of charge. Mrs. W. W. Murray, mother of Harry Murray, of Rensselaer, fell down stairs at her home in Barkley township Tuesday evening and received severe injuries. A gash was cut in her head and she received bruises that will confine her to her bed for some days. The marriage will take place at the home of the bride in Wilson, Kans. An unknown stranger was killed by a Monon switch engine in the Monon yards Monday. The stranger was a homeless old man who was trying to get to Chicago, where his son is living. He was assisted by the citizens of Monon and had gone to the yards to board a freight when the accident occbrred.
