FAIR OAKS.
Milt Gundy spent the Fourth with friends at Momence, 111,, returning home Sunday. Joe Right and wife, of Thayer, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Right. Rev. Hall will preach at the Christian church next Sunday afternoon. Everybody invited. Thos. Fry and wife were the guests of their daughter, Mrs. Herrington, at DeMotte, last Saturday and Sunday. Don t forget the excursion to Chicago next Sunday, July 13. Only 75 cents round trip. Fair Oaks and Parr had a game of base ball at the park last Saturday afternoon. Score 14 to 12 in Parr’s favor. Calvin Burroughs and wife were at the county seat Saturday on business. Mrs. Dr. Proudly returned home Monday, alter a few days’ visit with friends and relatives in Chicago. Waidie McKean came with her for a two w eeks’ visit. Nellie Fordyce returned to her home at Ancona, 111., Monday, after a two weeks’ visit with the Misses Dodge. Raspberry picking is in full blast at the Haileck nursery these days. The crop is large and the berries fine. Miss Alice Dewitt returned to Goodland last Monday, after a few days’ visit with her parents. C. H. McCullough returned to his home at Ancona, 11l , last Monday, after a few days’ visit with Miss Blanche Dodge. At this writing, Monday evening, Uncle Billy Cox is reported to be fast sinking and his recovery seems very doubtful He has been sick about three weeks with stomach trouble. A. Moore, of Lafayette, spent Sunday with relatives and friends in town, returning home Monday, accompanied by his wife and children, who had been here the pastf 1 two weeks.
Biuce Moffitt is building a good six-room dwelling house just south of Peter Zea’s residence. P. \V. Nelson will occupy it when completed. About one hundred from Fair Oaks took advantage of the Fourth of July rales, and spent the day at the nearby towns holding celebrations, mostly at Thayer and Lowell. Harvey Querry and family, formerly of this place, hut now of Hancock county, are visiting triends and relatives here and at Kniman. 1 hey got a good taste of the severe storm that lately visited that county. The German Medicine Co., of Cincinnati, struck town last Sunday for a week’s stay They are holding evening entertainments under canvass to good sized crowds, in connection with advertising and selling their various cure-all remedies
Chas. V anarsdel received the sad news by telegram last Friday, July 4th, of the accidental drowning of his youngest brother, Harley, at Monon, while in swimming. The accident happened at 2:30 p. m„ but the body was not found until the next afternoon at 3 o clock, about a half mile down the river. His age was a little more than 19 years. He had been working for John Hicks on the extra gang and bore a good reputation as an honest young man. The funeral was held Sunday at 11 a. m., attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends.
