Declamation Contest.
The second annual declamation contest took place in the court house last Saturday afternoon. The contest was open to all school children of Jasper county except from Rensselaer and Marion townships. Before the contest the participants were given a free hack ride over the city and treated to a fine dinner at the Makeever House. There were ten contestants, as follows: Ethel Parker, of Hanging Grove; Nellie Nichols, of Barkley; Harvey Roadifer, of Jordan; Glen Clemens, of Keener; Bertha Smalley, of Carpenter; Belle Southard, of Milroy; D. D. White, of Walker; Cora Dexter, of Union; Emma Lane, of Newton, and Lena Williamson, of Remington. The judges were Revs. 0. D. Royse, A. G. Work and Mrs. Maude Hall, of Rens selaer, and Miss Dora Wickwire, of Goodland. Prizes were awarded as follows: First—Shakespeare—D. D. White, Walker. Second—Longfellow’s Works—Lena Williamson, Remington. Third—History of U. S.—Ethel Parker, Hanging Grove. Fourth - Tanglewood—Cora Dexter, Union. Fifth—Bartlett’s Quotations—Bertha Smalley, Carpenter.
